Knights wearing the armor of an alternative generation scream down the dirt, riding their mechanical steeds. Man and motorcycle become one in this fast-paced sport. Supercross is competitive and pits the best dirt bike riders in an on-edge battle against one another that is a spectacle to behold. The sport is a rush that words are too weak to describe.

Supercross stands apart from standard motocross racing in that it is held completely within the confines of an arena. There are no confines, though, to the raw power of motorcycles digging through crude earth. It should not be confused with the sport of arenacross, which takes place in smaller venues than is normal for a supercross race. For anyone who wants to shift from amateur motocross racing, arenacross serves as a good intermediate before one is going to do supercross.

In the United States, many supercross races require participants to posses a membership in the American Motorcycle Association, as well as to sign a waver to do supercross events under their jurisdiction. It is always required to possess the necessary riding gear when participating in a supercross race. The proper clothing, helmet, goggles, gloves, boots and other equipment is both a necessity for one's own safety and a necessity under the rules of the sport.

If a racer truly wishes to be in a supercross race, they need to ride as much as possible.  One should be comfortable with the dirt bike that they ride. Many beginners will end up peering down at their own front wheels. Instead, it is important to keep one's head held up so that a rider can see what is coming at him. Being able to correctly pass another dirt bike and to handle the jumps that will be in the race are other skills that you must develop to do supercross. The old adage goes that practice makes perfect. In supercross, and in all motorcycle riding, it also saves lives.

Practicing while on a track is one of the most important tasks to do to prepare yourself for supercross. Starting is one of the most difficult parts of a race, and also one of the most dangerous. While it is important to utilize precision coming out of the gate, it is also important to keep one's cool. Most accidents tend to occur during this part of the race.

Supercross is an incredible sport to watch. However, nothing beats competing in the sport on your own. Strapping on the gloves and helmet change everything as you become ready to take on the world from the back of your own mechanical steed.
