Finding gun control statistics can be as easy as doing a search over the Internet.  That being said, when you do such a search you come up with a multitude of different sites with all sorts of statistics.  So before starting your search it is best to clearly define what you are looking for.

Do you want national, state, or local statistics?  Another thing to consider is what you're looking for in the field of gun control statistics.  Are you looking for data on the right to carry, are you looking for local violent crime statistics involving firearms, or do you just need basic statistics like the number of Americans who own firearms?  This will really help you find the appropriate data and will save you a lot of time in the process.

If you have decided on local data and statistics, the internet may or may not be the best place for you to start.  This will depend on the size or your community and what data you want.  If you live in a small or rural community, it's likely that will not be able to locate this information online. However, you can go to your local law enforcement agencies and ask for the information.  Places you can try are your local municipal police department, your county sheriff's office or, if there is a local branch of the State Patrol in your area, they may have gun control statistics which are broken down by county or parish.  All of these places should have some sort of information on the subject.  However, if this fails, another option is to check with your local city hall or courthouse. They often have statistical data relating to the surrounding communities, especially if you are looking for crime statistics.

If you need statewide data then you should be able to locate the information in question on the Internet, either by looking your state's official websites, such as the state Highway Patrol site or other state-run web pages.  Another option for statewide data is to check with national sites such as the FBI or the NRA or other groups with an interest in gun control.  These sites often break the data down by state as well as presenting it as a whole for national statistics.

National figures are a little easier to come by and can usually be found easily over the internet.  There are many governmental agencies that can provide data, and there are also a number of independent sites.  As mentioned previously, one good source for reliable and unbiased data is the FBI database.  Other sites such as the NRA and the Brady Campaign both have statistics, but the information on these sites may be somewhat biased.  It is not that the information is not completely reliable but some things may be left out or used to their advantage.  One reliable independent source that is out there is located at Just The Facts.  This is an independent organization which provides nothing but factual statistical data on a myriad of topics, including gun control.
