There are a variety of martial arts styles available today and each of them have their own unique skill set and principals. If you were to choose just one you would have to make sure the one you chose offers what you are looking for. Are you looking to win belts as a professional MMA fighter? Are you looking to find a martial art that possesses much rich history and tradition? Is the style you seek more for protection for you or your loved ones? Maybe you would just like something that keeps you in shape and instills a sense of discipline? First of all, here are a series of variables to consider when choosing a martial art:

  • Budget - You may have all the enthusiasm in the world for a martial art, but you can only practice what's within your pay scale. Some dojos and teachers vary on pricing and some styles require more gear than others (such as Kendo!) and that means more money to be spent.
  • Ultimate Goal - What do you want out of this? Do you want an aggressive instructor that will push you and make you a killing machine? Would you like to constantly spar and have aggressive training that pushes you to your limits? Perhaps you would rather partake in a more subdued martial art that focuses on health and flexibility. There are many martial arts that vary in intensity and overall style. What do you want?
  • Choose a Martial Art - Having figured what your goal is and what you want out of this experience has led you to your choice that meets your needs. Now you must research all the instructors and dojos that specialize in your desired martial art. Call them and request the instructor's qualifications and ask to sit in on a class to get a feel for it. Remember not everyone is capable of some martial arts maneuvers such as  the spinning kicks of Hapkido or the impressive dance-like fighting employed in Capoiera!
  • Create Your Discipline - Martial arts are now a part of your life and all for the better. That being said, you must now dedicate certain times of the week to practice and train. Creating a strict routine helps to enforce ones discipline. If you do not want your time and money to be wasted then make sure the times you choose are times you will attend.
