Surfing is a very healthy and pleasurable sport when practiced with the proper preparation and knowledge. And a good surfboard is an indispensable item for every surfer. Follow the tips below to help you choose the best surfboard:
- Look for a trusty and competent surfboard shaper. Tell him your height, your weight, your surfing experience level, the type and size of wave you will ride, and if you are right- or left- handed. It is far better ask for the services of a professional than buying a ready-made surfboard in a store. He will shape it for you!
- Size does matter. There are two types of surfboards, longboards and shortboards, each with its own style of surfing. If you are a novice, you should look for bigger boards. Bigger boards are easier to control, and they are somewhat slower and more stable. If you are an experienced surfer, you may look for smaller boards. Smaller boards are more maneuverable so they are better for performing radical moves. However, many experienced surfers love longboarding, and many beginners like shortboards. It is up to you choose between these two styles.
- Choose the tail type. The wider the tail, the more turn-off area, making the surfboard more maneuverable in small waves. However, the wide-tailed boards do lose control in big wave surfing.
- Round and pin - Their small area makes them excellent for big riding, good also for surfing in a smooth line.
- Square and squash - Allows for abrupt turns, but are wider and limited to surfing small waves.
- Swallow types - Allows you to perform deep carves in the waves.
- Round and pin - Their small area makes them excellent for big riding, good also for surfing in a smooth line.
- Choose the type of fins. Fins can be fixed or removable. The fixed fins are cheaper, but the removable fins are easier to transport.
- Choose the color and the finishing type. Tell the shaper your preferences. He will probably show you many options, like drawings, colors, etc.
Choose a good surfboard and happy surfing!!!

Caution:
Always buy from a qualified professional.
Don´t trust in very cheap surfboards - they have poor materials and will tend to break.
If you are a novice, NEVER surf waves bigger than 5 feet. You can get in trouble very easily.
Quick Tips:
If you are a novice surfer, always choose a bigger surfboard (I am talking from my own experience!).
Ask the shaper for a suitable surfboard according to you weight/height.
The type of wave you ride will influence your choice of board type.
The better way to start surfing is in beach breaks with waves sized 3 feet. Do not start in corals or stone breaks.
