Western pleasure is a style of horseback riding that involves slow, controlled movements and a deep connection between horse and rider.  In horse shows, the western pleasure class requires precise positioning and control and is extremely competitive.  Here's how to compete:

  • Stock horses, such as quarter horses, are normally used for this type of competition.  They are well suited to developing the communication skills necessary to be successful in these events.  Hot-blooded horses, like thoroughbreds are generally not well suited to western pleasure although some calmer members of these breeds can be trained.
  • When selecting a horse, look for one with a natural ability to control movement.  A horse that can lope slowly without breaking gait naturally will do well in competition.
  • Competitions involve riders to “stay on the rail”, meaning that the riders will follow each other and execute instructions in a single file formation.  If you find yourself “tailgating” or passing another rider, you are going too fast.
  • The key to winning western pleasure competition is control.  A horse should be able to take cues from its rider without tossing its head or swishing its tail; it should maintain a quiet body.  Transitions between gaits should be effortless and smooth, with no noticeable pause or hesitation.  Conversely, the rider should communicate with his or her horse silently, with no audible or visual cues being detected by either the judge or the audience.

A successful western pleasure rider will have spent many hours working with his or her horse, understanding the cues the horse needs and how to communicate effectively while conditioning the horse to receive the cues and execute the commands perfectly.  Western pleasure is intended to look effortless, but many hours of training and preparation are put into a winning team.

Grooming a winning western pleasure horse is also very important to a successful showing.  The mane should be clipped short or banded so that the judge can see the horse's muscular neck.  Riders should also adhere to the standard dress code while ensuring that they choose a costume that will get them noticed.

Western pleasure events are a great way to get children started out enjoying horseback riding as a hobby.  The slow, controlled movements allow children to learn how to properly ride a horse and to communicate their needs effectively.  Having children learn on a horse with a quiet, patient, and well-trained disposition is always best.  To find western pleasure events in your area, browse the internet or local agricultural publication.
