Make a Fan out of Her!

When I met my husband ten years ago, I discovered that he not only enjoyed rooting for our local football team, but was also a dedicated fan of the game. At first, I joined him at the games but did not sit with him to watch games on television. I always asked him about the final score out of polite interest for something that he loves, but I saw no interest in the game itself.

In fact, each time we attended a home game, I was more interested in looking at the sexy appearance of some of these players dressed in tight pants and wearing shoulder pads that made them look even more muscular. Of course, hot dogs were also part of the highlights for me. What transformed me into a hardcore football fan? Well, in two words, MY HUSBAND! Let me tell you how he did it.

  1. Time and patience always pay off! As I was sitting there, I was puzzled at times by the crowd's reactions so it tickled my curiosity and I started to ask my husband some questions...a LOT of questions. Despite all the questions, he always took the time to patiently answer each one of my questions. That's when I started to develop an interest in the game.
  2. The media provide good topics for conversations. My husband, who is also an avid reader of newspapers, noticed my increasing interest in football and started to share the contents of articles written about our home football team. Getting to know them prompted questions and gradually increased my knowledge about the game and our team.
  3. Participating in women's football clinics made it fun! Our home football team offers an annual football clinic for women. It gave me the opportunity to meet a lot of players, experience some of their workout routines, learn about the players' positions and the rules of the game, and also simply made it fun!
  4. Watching and predicting. As my football knowledge grew, I decided to learn more about the rules and the penalties that affected the flow and the outcome of the game. My husband and some players and referees whom I met during the women's football clinics helped me understand the rules and penalties better. Now I can find the action that caused a penalty, and can even predict the yardage gained or lost by a team.
  5. Passion is part of the game! As season ticket holders, we have been able to attend numerous games and I have become very passionate about the game. Thanks to my understanding of football, I am now able to yell at the ref for a bad call and cheer for my team. During passionate discussions with my husband and other football fans, I am now able to stand my ground by explaining my opinion without feeling like a fool, because I know what I'm talking about.

If you follow these steps, use time and patience with your wife -- and if she is willing to really focus on the game instead of the hot dogs and those football players' nice attributes -- I can assure you that this is how to develop your wife's interest in football. Soon you will be able to enjoy a good football game together!
