The “slam dunk” is the most exciting move in basketball. Nothing gets the crowd going wild in a basketball game more than a slam dunk. A slam dunk or dunk is when a player slams the ball inside the basketball hoop with one hand or both hands. Dunks are done to excite the crowd. They are also used to taunt players or embarrass others, which can affect the performance of the other team members and boost their morale for better scoring. The proper execution of a slam dunk requires practice and consistent body conditioning.

Here’s how you can strengthen your leg muscles and the skills you need to do the most exciting move in basketball.

  1. Increasing the height of your vertical leap. The first thing that a dunker needs is a strong pair of legs for leaping. Putting weights on the upper part of your ankles and doing squats could help. Sleeping and taking height increasing food supplements would also help you become taller, making it easier for you to reach the rim.
  2. Plyometrics. Plyometrics has been viewed as the best and fastest way to increase your vertical leap and overall body movement. Plyometrics is a type of exercise which aims to enhance one’s muscular power. It gives you the ability to release a huge amount of force quickly coming from different muscle parts.
  3. Know the muscle groups to be developed. Muscle development has two parts: first, you need to know which muscle groups should become stronger. The first muscle groups are the quadriceps, hamstrings and calves. These muscles need to become stronger because these affect your knee and hip’s extension as well as the flexing of your ankles.
  4. The second muscle group needs flexibility. These are the hamstrings and hip flexors. Having these two muscles to become flexible will help reduce the risk of injuries in jumping. A recommended exercise for this is running upstairs because it targets the quadriceps, hips, and calves.
  5. Practice jumping at the court. There are several exercises you can do on a court to improve your vertical leap. These are:
  6. Try to touch the net with a running jump. Try doing this until you are able to do it for at least three times in a row (you could increase gradually as you improve until you could do it ten times in a row).
  7. Move to tapping the backboard. Repeat the process with the net until you reach ten without Progress to the goal o touching the backboard, again until you can do it ten times easily.
  8. Progress to tapping the rim until you can touch it consistently.
  9. Gripping the ball. Practice gripping the ball and dunking with smaller balls. Start with a tennis ball, then move on to a volleyball ball and work your way up to a basketball. Remember that even people who can grip basketballs lose grip when dunking.
  10. Buy a good pair of shoes. It is no secret that having high-quality shoes helps players improve their leaping ability. More importantly, this will prevent you from getting hurt when you dunk. Having the pair of shoes that fir your body’s preference can increase your performance in the game.
