Approach a sales associate with your needs and wants unless they approach you first.
Start with the basics...skates.
Once you have your skates, you'll want a jock or a cup that is comfortable and hockey pants.
Next, you'll need shin guards.
Now that you are equipped with the bottom half, let's move on to the top half. Next up, shoulder pads.
Then, elbow pads
Almost there! The most important piece of equipment you can have and are required to wear on any ice surface - a helmet. Depending on the brand of the helmet, the sizing will be a little different. The measurements will be available to you either on the box or with help from the salesperson at the store.

And last but not least, a Hockey stick. You have your choice between a wooden stick or a composite stick. It all comes down to personal preference. Ideally, your stick should come right under your chin once your wearing your skates.
To finalize everything, you'll need a jersey for practice or games if not supplied by the team, hockey socks (which come in every color imaginable, a neck guard, tape (clear and solid - if player prefers to use some) a bag for your equipment, skate guards or blade covers, and a mouth guard if required by the league.
