Indeed the thrill and excitement of baseball - America’s favorite past time - will never be complete without the announcement of scores. So how do you keep score during a wild baseball game? Here are the easiest ways to be attuned with the game of baseball and to keep score while having fun:

Strike 1: Know the laws of the land. For you to be an effective score keeper, you have to know what should be scored or not. Do not be afraid of this step, because you do not need to conduct an in-depth study about baseball; you just need to know the basics. Here are the basic rules to remember: First, is the runner out or safe? The answer lies within the umpire’s decision. Keep track of the decision and you have a record. Second, what is a hit? The determination of a hit is the field in which you have to pour much concentration. Here’s a quick rule that will surely hit: Once a ball is hit by the batter, he can reach the base as safe as possible because of error, a hit or the fielder’s choice. The determination of the hit could be done using the scorebook. The scorebook will help you determine errors, hits, or fielder’s choice.

Strike 2: Get a constitution.  Knowing the laws of the land as stated in the first tip could not be enough through observations and experience. You still have to consult the rule book – Scorebook. The best way to access the book is by purchasing a copy, borrowing from the library or from friends, or by downloading a copy from the Internet. Do not worry because the book is cheap. Score sheets obtained from online sites may help a newbie like you. You may customize free downloadable score sheets.

Strike 3: Try out. Now that you have a background about the game and you have your score sheet, watch a baseball game and try to record scores for that game. How are you going to do that? Here’s how:

  • First, you have to complete the score sheet with the basic information. The basic data about the game includes the names of the playing team and the complete date and venue of the game. Pertinent data like the names of the ballpark and the umpire as well as the record for the time and the weather should also be considered.
  • Second, make sure that before the game starts, you have the complete list of the line up. The line up pertains to the list of the names of the players. The list should be in order of their batting.
  • Third, remember the following tips during the game: (1) Each batter has one box in the score sheet. Each box contains two to three lines. (2) Substitute players could be recorded in the lower lines. (3) Upper lines should be used for the recording of the names of the original players. (4) Positions as well as the uniform numbers of each player should also be written.

Now that you have the three strikes to the game, you are now set to go and score a baseball game!
