Self defense has grown from just a simple movie flick where the action star would try to do some Buddha fists on his or her opponent and the latter just lays waste on the ground and dies. Today, and in real life, the art of self defense has become more of a mental strategy to escape a seemingly inescapable moment of doom for the victim. In other words, an enraged attacker can just smack you down with something hard or shoot you with a gun perhaps and no matter how highly-trained you are with the best of martial arts, you can’t do anything about it. This may be true most of the time for a premeditated attack, but for any other situations, knowing some self defense moves is still a good way to save the day.

This article is not going to demonstrate some flashy Bruce Lee moves that you can use in a real fight. Rather, this guide will try to give you the best of techniques to avoid or win any situation that requires you to defend yourself.

The first thing to remember is to put yourself in the mind of your attacker. Think about what he could probably do to you to help you anticipate his moves. During such an encounter, gallantry is not an option so try to maximize whatever object you can hold on to as a weapon or to shield yourself.

Since most of these ill-fated situations normally happen when you are alone, it is always best to try to call for help by any means you can. Panicking will often make you forget that 9-1-1 or a friend on speed dial is just a phone call away. In case you are in a place that is familiar to you, always position yourself at a good angle, with a clear view; avoid dead ends or corners as those are the last place you’d want to be caught.

Also, try to understand the motive of your aggressor. If he poses little to moderate danger, you may want to keep him alive and therefore limit your choices of objects to pick up or else you’d be more of the attacker in the end.  Keep a balanced state of mind and try, as much as possible, to remain calm at all times.

Most fear during such situations comes from the mindset that the attacker is older and stronger than you are. This fear is very likely to paralyze you and keep you from defending yourself while you can simply escape such danger. The fact is, you don’t really need some karate moves to win a fight. Though knowing those ninja moves you see on TV might just scare your aggressor away, in such an encounter, premeditated attackers are usually prepared to do just about anything to get whatever they want from you. It’s important to remember that staying alive is more important than looking good with some flamboyant karate moves.
