How To Make S'mores

Making s'mores is not difficult. In fact, it is probably the easiest recipe to make, next to boiling water. There is no "right" way to make a s'more. Anyway you like it, is the right way. This recipe is one passed down through years of family and scout camps.

  1. Start your campfire. There is no true camp way of making s'mores anywhere else but over a campfire. With family and friends gathered around the campfire, there is no better way to start an evening. In order to properly enjoy your s'more, consider having stories ready to tell.. Heroic stories, ghost stories, and funny stories are always enjoyed, but it is best to tailor them to your audience.
  2. Assemble the ingredients. Ingredients listed are per s'more. Recommended: 1 box of graham crackers, 1 large bag of marshmallows, and 3-5 bars of chocolate per 5 people.
    • 1 square - Hershey's milk chocolate bar.
    • 2 squares - graham crackers.
    • 1 - marshmallows (big size).
  3. Heat your marshmallow over the fire. A traditionalist would suggest using a stick that has had the bark whittled away. A long roasting fork will also do the trick. There are two main variations on heating the marshmallow.
    • Variation 1 - place the marshmallow in the flames and allow to ignite. Quickly blow out the ignited marshmallow and move on to step 4.
    • Variation 2 - Gently brown the marshmallow near the fire until it becomes very soft. As you might imagine, warmed marshmallows are wonderful solo.
  4. Assemble the S'more. Layer the ingredients as follows, from bottom to top layer: graham cracker, Hershey's milk chocolate, marshmallow, graham cracker.
  5. Eat.
  6. Repeat. Continue until you are filled.

Although some of the marshmallows will end up in the fire AND some of the s'mores are going to end up on you, it's all in good fun.

Now many of y'all may be thinking that this is very biased. And truthfully, it is. In Texas, a campfire is easy to come by. There is very wide open land not far from any major city. There are many opportunities available if one likes to go camping. However, there is no reason to discriminate if you do not have that opportunity. If it is due to weather, location, or any other factor, s'mores can be made at home too. Try this!

  1. Fire up the microwave. Ok, may not sound as lofty as starting the campfire, but someone still has to operate this contraption.
  2. Assemble the ingredients - No different from above.
    • 1 square - Hershey's milk chocolate bar.
    • 2 squares - graham crackers.
    • 1 - marshmallows (big size).
  3. Heat your marshmallows IN THE MICROWAVE. This is not going to brown the marshmallows like the fire will, but it will make them warm and gooey. BE VERY CATIOUS as the microwave can cause a very warm center. The microwave can also cause the marshmallow to explode.
  4. Assemble the s'more. Layer the ingredients as follows, again form bottom to top: graham cracker, Hershey's milk chocolate, marshmallow, graham cracker.
  5. Eat.
  6. Repeat.

Do not rush the experience. Enjoying everyone's company and laughing at each other trying to eat this sticky treat is all part of making s'mores. S'mores have been a part of camp tradition before summer camp became another requirement for entering college. It is part of the fun. Always remember, s'mores are meant to be fun...and tasty!
