Sometimes, you just have to make your hobby and passion as your livelihood. If you’re a sailing aficionado, opening a sailing school might be a good idea. Starting this type of business endeavor requires some capital and a tenacious approach so you have to be really sure that this is what you want. If you’ve already decided that this is the way forward, the rest should be easy.
- Boats. For a sailing school to be a school for aspiring sailors, you better have a good fleet of sea-worthy vessels. You can canvas for potential teaching boats online or at local dealerships. These types of showrooms are typically seen in marinas and coastal locations.
- Insurance. Since this is a school, students who come in for instruction may not be exactly naturals (at least not for now). This makes your boats a bit vulnerable to a bit of abuse. To ensure that you get bang for your buck (not to mention your peace of mind), secure a comprehensive insurance policy for your properties.
- Curriculum. Education is all about systems of teaching so with your educational team and instructors formulate a good program that could best help your future students. It would also help if you can offer various programs for people with different skill sets and experience. This improves your chances of appealing to different demographics. Make sure that your program is in step with your country’s sailing governing body. This would make certification easier later on.
- Organizations and associations. Joining a sailing institution or organization would do wonders to your start-up business. By knowing the other bigwigs in the industry, you can channel some of their influence and attention into your new up and coming sailing school.
- Branding and educational materials. Work on your brand name and invest on custom made handbooks, notepads and other relevant paraphernalia for sailing students. The image of a sailing school has to evoke something that would make other potential students want to join. Ask your educational team to come up with examinations and other learning tools for your students.
- Marketing. Exert effort in getting noticed. Nobody will sign up and enroll if you don’t show people that you exist. Prepare to sell your ideas to many people through investing in banners, flyers, brochures and online advertisements. Hosting a party to officially launch your business can also help drum up interest as such events often attract the local press. Make sure that you put your best foot forward. Your brochures must reflect your vision for your sailing school so it has to look visually impeccable. Highlight the advantages of your school by featuring those strong points with emphasis on your promotional materials. Poorly made brochures often end up in the dumpster so even if you have a good school, no one would ever bother to take a second look.
- Permits and licenses. Make sure that you’re playing by the rules by obtaining all necessary business permits and licenses required in your state or city.
Opening a sailing school isn’t for everyone. But for people who want to share the exhilaration and excitement of being in the open seas, it might just be the best idea for a business.
