Disc golf is a game played by many around the world, but it is still a game that is obscure to the majority of the population. Also commonly referred to as Frolf or Frisbee golf, the sport actually has many similarities to the more common form of golf, and some obvious differences.
The overall objective of disc golf is the same as regular golf; to get the lowest score possible on both individual holes and the entire course. This is done by using drives, approach shots and putts. Instead of using clubs to hit a ball, specialized "discs" are used to throw into a circular set of chains that are suspended above ground in a metallic structure, commonly called a cage. The discs have a shape that are similar to a Frisbee, but are much heavier and are built more durable. Disc Golf discs have many different designs, each built to achieve specific outcomes. For instance, drivers are usually lighter and are built to achieve greater distance then approach discs, which are heavier and have greater accuracy. Putters are also built for accuracy, but many can be found that minimize rolling after hitting the ground, such as very flexible rubber putters. These basic builds are just the tip of the iceberg however, as there are literally hundreds of discs out on the market today designed to achieve specific outcomes, such as falling left, right, s-curving or rolling long distances on the ground.
Just as there are many different discs to use, a player can master a numerous amount of shots to perfect his or her game. Discs can be thrown backhand, forehand, or even "tomahawk" style to name a few. Skilled players can even throw a disc to roll across the ground towards the cage, sometimes several hundred feet.
A huge difference that disc golf has to regular golf is the low cost of play and the formalities. Courses are often located in state and city parks, requiring only a small parking fee, and often no fee at all. Also, the equipment is nowhere close to the costliness of regular golf. Disc golf is also a relatively laid back sport, and you will never have to set up tee times and plan days in advance to enjoy a round.
