An Insight into How to Play the Sport of Settleball
By Shane Grehan
Settleball is a sport, similar to volleyball played with a regular tennis ball. It is a casual sport created in late 2008 in The High School, Dublin, an Irish secondary school. Since its creation, settleball has swept across Irish schools and is one of the most popular non-officiated sports in Irish youth culture at present. It was thought to have originated as a combination of murderball and volleyball, both popular games in secondary schools.
- Get a standard size tennis ball.
- Find a court, preferably the size of a volleyball court, though this is not essential. What is necessary is a net or bar of some sort (e.g. rugby posts etc.) to separate the court in half (obviously half a court per team).
- There should be two teams each made up of five people. (The number of people may vary depending on the size of the court.)
- Each team should line up on either side of the court, like in volleyball. A player from one of the teams then needs to serve using the palm of their hand. The aim is to get the ball over the bar or the net.
- The other team must then hit the ball back over the net again using their palms. The number of hits does not matter as long as the ball eventually clears the bar. Play goes on like this until one side fails to return the ball. The other team now gains that point.
- The first team to 20 points generally wins. (Although the score to be achieved is up to the players.) When one team gets half way to the necessary number of points, teams switch sides.
Note: This is a very basic introduction to settleball. This sport also tends to have a high injury rate so be careful when playing settleball.
