Wakeboarding is a water sport wherein the surfer - while on top of a surfboard - is holding a long rope with handles for the surfer's hands. Those ropes are connected to the rear part of a speedboat while the surfer is dragged. The difficulty is keeping afloat, in view of the "wake" of water that a boat leaves behind. Good wakeboarders are able to jump these waves, and these jumps are what judges score highly.
If you're interested in trying wakeboarding out for yourself, there are a number of things you should know before you get started:
- Get the board that will perfectly suit you. The board that you need will depend on your height, your weight, and how good you are at wakeboarding. Make sure that the board you choose is the one you need, and that you will feel comfortable when you are on it.
- Lie or sit on the board first. Your feet and your board must be facing the boat. And the rope that you are holding on to must be placed at the center of the board. Your knees need to be bent as well and should also face the boat.
- Don't stand up while on top of the board while idle. If you do this, you will surely fall. The boat's speed will pull you up and give you balance while on the wakeboard.
- Once the boat pulls you up, relax. Once the boat gains speed, it will slowly pull you up. Once you are above the water, then you should swing your main foot forward so that the front of your board faces the boat. This one will be the hardest things to do, and beginners tend to fall several times before getting it right. But keep on practicing until you manage to pull it off. Nothing feels better than pulling it off perfectly, especially after numerous unsuccessful tries. Once you're standing, do not return to a squatting position. In case you can't stand upright when the boat is pulling you then try locking your elbows to your knees. That will help a lot, especially for beginners.
- Putting your weight on your toes will help you change your board's direction. Just point your foot toward the direction you want to go, and the board will turn in that direction. Your rear leg should be the one carrying your weight, not the front.
- Jumps You can execute jumps by swinging from the end of the boat toward the center where the boat's wake makes waves. You can do somersaults and turns in the air as you jump. These are more advanced moves, but to some, this is the point of wakeboarding.
Wakeboarding can be challenging to pull off at first, but with practice your skills will improve until you get the hang of it. Experts and more experienced wakeboarders can also share some helpful hints and great tips that will help you along the way. As with other water sports, safety should be a foremost concern. Wear a life jacket, so you won't have trouble keeping afloat when you wipe out.
