How To Walk Silently

There are several reasons why you may want to soften the sound of your stride. Are you following someone? Or trying to walk around your apartment without disturbing the downstairs neighbors? Follow these steps and you will be able to walk silently.

Materials:
Soft-soled shoes

  1. Observe your present stride. Before you can determine how to improve your walking style, you need to determine what is causing your noisy tread. Do you shuffle your feet or just have heavy steps? By focusing on your walk you will start to soften your steps.
  2. Avoid dragging or shuffling your feet. Dragging and shuffling let everyone know you are coming their way. Be sure that you pick your feet fully up with each step.
  3. Change your shoes. Flip-flops and clunky-heeled shoes make their own noise no matter how gently you stride. Switch these out for soft-soled shoes and your steps will be quieter in no time.
  4. Check for fit. Ill-fitting shoes tend to drag and snap as they slide off and back onto your feet.
  5. Slow down. Have you noticed that the faster you walk, the louder your steps sound? This is especially true if you are wearing hard soled shoes or heels. Take your time and pay attention to the sound of your stride and you will start to quite down.
  6. Notice your surroundings. The type of ground cover or flooring you walk on will also contribute to the sound of your steps. When outside notice dried leaves or rocky ground, which may transfer sound. Stick to soft grass or sand for your silent steps. When indoors walk on carpet to muffle any sound instead of vinyl, wood or ceramic tile flooring.
  7. Improve your posture. Standing straight and taking sure strides helps your feet land flat on the floor when you walk. Improved posture also helps muscle tone in your back and legs, which will allow you greater control of your stride. Hold the muscles then lightly place your foot for each step.
  8. Experiment with foot placement. The way your foot connects with the ground can impact sound because you are placing your weight onto different parts of your feet. As the weight is distributed some steps will be louder than others. On a soft tile floor practice walking normally then try stepping with your heel to toe or toe to heel. Often stepping lightly on your toes will quiet your stride.
  9. Practice taking light, quiet steps. Being able to walk silently takes practice. Be sure to practice wearing different shoes and on different floor surfaces until you can get around any room without making a sound.

There are several benefits to walking silently, whether you want to sneak up on someone or just be politely quiet. When you focus on your stride, you will be better able to control it. Be sure to practice.
