The NBA draft is the time of the basketball year when NBA teams pick new players from different colleges in the NCAA or overseas. You can watch this on any channel that it is showing on, whether in Solar Sports, ESPN or Star Sports. But if you miss it, you can check NBA.com - which gives you a written report of the draft. If you want to see the actual show, you can watch it online at espn360.com, InsideHoops.com or go to youtube.com and search for NBA draft that you want to watch.

What happens in the NBA Draft?

The event happens annually, in the month of June. Teams have a certain arrangement or order in picking the player they want for their team. This order is usually dependent on their standing in the previous season. The team with the most number of losses usually gets to pick first while the champion gets to choose last. A draft lottery is necessary to determine the exact position of the teams in the draft order. Players who are eligible for the draft usually come from different colleges in America, while some come from abroad. High school students though are not allowed to get in the NBA so soon.

The draft has two rounds, where each team gets to choose one player per round. There are 30 teams in the NBA, thus there will be 30 picks in the first round and another 30 for the second round. Players drafted in round one are assured a multi-year contract, while those selected in round two do not get any assurance and the team that chose them gets to decide whether they get to play or not.

This is where scouting for the right player comes in the picture. Teams must have the right information about how to pick the best player when their turn comes. They must have a list of prospects, especially if their turn to pick is somewhere in the bottom of the order. The team who gets to pick first is like in a one-horse race because they get to pick the best among the drafts.

In the basketball year, the NBA draft is probably the most awaited and hottest event next to the finals and playoffs. This is probably the reason why there are so many websites that supply lots of updates and comments regarding the occasion. If you miss the actual screening of the draft, you can easily watch and read about it online. Lots of websites even supply a mock draft, which shows the results if the picking was held on a certain day before the scheduled day of drafting. Most websites are very detailed, giving information like profiles of prospect players, rankings of players by their position, and much more.

Note that the ‘draft' is not exclusive to NBA. Of course, there are other existing sports and leagues like the WNBA, baseball, soccer, NFL - National Football League, etc. And just like in the NBA, they get to have their own drafts, where they also get to pick new players for their team.
