Swimming in the open ocean can be adventurous. But what's more adventurous is riding on the big waves with a surf board. Have you ever thought of surfing just to stimulate an adrenaline rush? Surfing can really satisfy your urge for a thrilling and dangerously fun-filled adventure.

If you have tried skate boarding, surfing is just the same. Actually, skate boarding originated from surfing because surfers then wanted to try surfing on the land--thus, they came up with a surf board with wheels.

Here are some basic surfing lessons that will get you using your surf boards.

Paddling

You need to learn how to paddle to increase your chances of catching good waves. Here are the things you should learn to practice paddling with your surf board:

  1. Practice surf paddling on the beach first. Do this by making a mound of sand about 1 foot high.
  2. Put the middle of the surfboard on top of the mound. Lie on the board while keeping your head up, keep looking forward, shoulders slightly off of the board, and feet and legs slightly upward, too.
  3. Practice paddling by reaching forward and pulling through until your arm is fully extended up to the rail. Do this one hand by the other. For easier paddling, make sure that your hands are cupped a little and your elbows are bent when reaching forward.
  4. Practice what you've learned on the beach as soon as you're confident to conquer the sea. Begin with shallow water and slowly practice in deeper water. Take a break also whenever you feel tired, because this surfing lesson is really very tiring.

Standing

Now here comes the most exciting surf practice--standing on the surf board. Do the following and learn to stand on your board.

  1. Practice surf board standing on the beach. Do this by putting your surf board on the beach. Lie on the board while your arms are folded under your chest and your hands are spread, facing the board. Then, push your back up by pushing your hands.
  2. Bring your one leg forward then the other leg forward. Mimic the position of runners getting ready to start the marathon when you do this.
  3. Speedily but carefully stand up with your feet apart. Make sure that you are in the middle of the board to promote balance.
  4. Practice this on shallow water first. Expect to fail many times before you can perfectly do the standing up on the surf board. Many factors may affect your practice success, like the wind.

Also, make sure you have all the things you need before doing any of these basic surfing lessons. Of course, you should have your surf board. You can also have a wetsuit to keep your body warm. There are also other protective clothes for surfing like board shorts. Your favorite sports specialty shop or sports boutique shop surely has clothing and clothes for surfing, like some colorful board shorts.  Also make sure you have a leash that will prevent your losing your surf board while on the sea.

With surfing, you'll surely appreciate the open ocean. Just keep on practicing because the more you surf, the more you'll learn and enjoy surfing.
