People are getting hooked on running marathons. Running is an excellent cardiovascular exercise. Before you join a marathon, you need to make sure you can get the proper training.
Joining a marathon requires you to be ready physically and mentally so you can start training and finishing that 3k to 100k race course. Here are some tips to get you started.
- Do a morning running routine. This is where your energy is at its highest peak. Go jogging at the pace you can do, maintain and then increase your speed slowly.
- Eat a balanced diet. Eating right contributes to excellent body performance. Consume 1,800 to 2,000 calories with 200 to 300 grams of carbohydrates a day. It is needed to give you that burst of speed. Eat more whole grains, vegetables and lean protein for muscle repair. This will make you last in running or even other sports.
- Get hydrated. You need to drink 10 to 12 glasses of liquid a day. Drink more water; avoid sodas and coffee, which could cut your energy in half. It is better to drink water and fresh fruit juices than sports drinks since they pack more calories.
- Set a goal. Motivate yourself. Challenge yourself into first, finishing that race. Next, finish the race without giving up and going back to your hotel. Running tests how far you are willing to go to take pain, hunger and discomfort so you need to set your mind that you can do it.
- Don't overdo it. Don't push yourself too hard a week before the race. Do short workouts not more than 4.8 kilometers in the last 3 days. Training too hard cannot give your muscles time to repair it.
- Get enough sleep. The last two nights before the race is crucial. It can affect your performance. Make sure you get enough shut eye.
- Take care of your body during the race. Two hours before, drink 16 ounces of water and eat a light snack. Do a warm up. You need to let your muscles know that it's going to have a serious work out. Do ten minutes of walking or slow jogging and stretching. If you are not a fast runner, position yourself at the back because you might just end up being pushed and falling flat on your face if you put yourself along with fast runners.
Be careful in marathons because you can be under extreme pain and injury if you do not do it right. Remember the tips above and you will do just fine.
