BMX biking is an exhilarating, and relatively new, form of extreme sports. It is accessible to children and adults of all ages, and can be a great bonding family activity. If you or your child is interested in beginning this exciting new hobby, there are a few points you should keep in mind on how to ride a BMX bike.
First off, know the risks. Any sport has its own set of dangers, and BMX racing is no different. If you are a parent of a child who is interested in the sport, talk to a seasoned rider. He or she will be able to help you decide if this is the sport for your child, or if you should move on.
The next step to learn how to ride a BMX bike is to have the correct gear. Just about any long pair of durable pants, such as jeans, a long sleeved shirt and a sturdy pair of shoes will work. The most important piece of equipment needed is a good quality helmet. At this point, any rudimentary motor cross helmet will suffice. Once again, if this is the sport your child is interested in participating in, remind him or her of the importance of wearing a helmet. It should be a deal breaker if the child is not willing to agree upon this term.
Now that you have the right clothing, and a helmet, the next step is choosing a bike. If you are willing to invest the money, go ahead and purchase a bike specially built for BMX riding, but this is not necessary at this stage. Any bike will do for a beginner, just remove the chain guard and the stand. If you are having trouble converting a traditional bike, ask for assistance from a salesperson at your local bike shop.
One of the first rules of life is that you have to learn to crawl before you can walk, and this is also true of learning to ride BMX bikes. Before you or your child can do all the tricked out moves, jumps, and spins that you've seen on TV, you have to learn the basics of riding. Build your own ramp, or visit a local BMX park, and start practicing riding up and down the ramps. Give yourself a lot of time to learn the more basic moves, but with persistence, you'll be ready for a professional tour in no time!
