How To Select a Bicycle

Bicycle riding is a fun and enjoyable way to travel, stay fit and explore the environment. Here are a few things to consider when shopping for a new bike:

  1. Determine bicycle type. Before you select a bicycle, you first need to consider how exactly you will use the bicycle. Is it for recreational use to ride around town, or for fitness training and getting in shape? Are you interested in racing, or do you want a bicycle for mountain biking? If you are interested in a dual purpose bicycle, then you will want to consider a hybrid bicycle. Regardless of your answer, you need to understand that this step is critical as it directly influences the type of bicycle you will consider choosing when you are ready to purchase one.
  2. Determine your budget. Now that you have determined what type of bicycle you need, the next step is to consider your budget. How much money are you able to spend on the bike? Before setting an exact amount, you need to keep in mind that there may be other items you will need to purchase along with the bicycle, such as a helmet, extra parts, water bottles, pumps, shoes, camping gear or other bicycle accessories. Make a list of all of the necessary items you will need, and then you will know how much money you can spend on the actual bicycle itself.
  3. Research the market. After determining your budget, you will then need to educate yourself about the current bicycle market. As with any product, new bicycles are continuously being released and it is essential that you familiarize yourself with the bicycle type you need to purchase. One of the best, and most accurate, ways to research the market is with the Internet.
  4. Get local advice. If you have a bike shop in your area, then in addition to online research, it is suggested that you go down and get some advice from local bike experts. Explain to the salesman the type of bike you are looking for and your different concerns.
  5. Consider other key factors. Some additional things to consider when you select a bicycle are if it's adjustable, the comfort and safety. Most bicycles these days are manufactured with these factors in mind, but you do want to be sure that they are present in the model that you are purchasing just in case.
