If you are a runner, then one of the first things you probably purchased or registered for with your new baby is a running stroller. Now that your baby has arrived you are ready to break out your running shoes. Before you hit the road with your stroller, you should be sure you are ready for your new variation of running.

First, you should be sure to read the instruction manual to your stroller. You will want to be sure that you have assembled it correctly. This will ensure complete safety for you and your child. Test the brakes and the harnesses and practice putting your baby or child in and out of the running stroller. Many runners trip on the brake and rear axle when running so this is something in which you will need to be aware. You will also need to be aware of your running posture. Try to keep your shoulders up and do not hunch over the handlebar.

Another good idea would be to do a short test run without your child. This will help you learn how to run with a stroller, which is much different than running alone. You should also be sure that your route is a smooth surface with no major obstacles that you will need to avoid. Roads or sidewalks with a lot of bumps or loose gravel could be very dangerous. If you do travel over rough roads it will be helpful if you slightly lift up the front wheel.

Before running be sure your child is prepared. Know the weather forecast prior to the run. If it is going to be hot and sunny, then you should be sure to use sunscreen; check with the pediatrician to see if your child is old enough. If it is cold and windy, bundle your child with a coat, blanket, hat and gloves. If your child is old enough you can pack snacks, toys and hand-held games to keep them entertained during their ride. Be sure that these are items that cannot be easily thrown out of the stroller. Your child will learn to love their time in the running stroller.

While you are on the road be very alert and aware of your surroundings. Do not become easily distracted by other runners, cars, or even animals that may pass your way. It is also wise to leave your headphones at home when you run with your running stroller. This will keep you aware of your surroundings and also your child's needs.
