Fantasy baseball is just one of the many exciting fantasy sports around, such as fantasy football, baseball, and basketball. A fantasy sport is where the contestants draft an imaginary sports team composed of real-life sports players (like real life players from the Dodgers or the NFL), which play against teams owned by other contestants. The result of the game will then be simulated according to the statistics that are created by the sports players in real life.
Because the outcome of a fantasy baseball game depends on the statistics made by baseball players, it is important to know about how well the player performs in real life sports events. Here are some things to consider when choosing a designated hitter for fantasy baseball:
- Batting average. This is the number of hits divided by the number of at-bats. This is a good gauge of the player's batting ability.
- Home runs. A home run is made when a player hits the ball in a manner that allows him to circle the bases. The higher this number, the more likely he will win the game.
- Runs batted in. This measures the player's ability to allow his team members to score because of his hit. The more that a player is able to do this, the better is his chances of helping the team succeed.
- Total wins. This is how frequently a player has won a game in real life.
These statistics are easily obtained by looking at records. However there are some things that are not measured precisely and require close observation such as the following:
- Power. A designated hitter needs to hit the ball with strength to make home runs and a high number of runs batted in. You can estimate the power of a designated hitter through analysis of these factors, but it is better if you watch how the batter hits the ball during an actual game.
- Speed. This ensures that the player will cover bases and make home runs, helping the team score. You can gauge his average speed by timing how fast he runs the bases.
- Resiliency. Players are bound to have injuries sometime in the game, and they may succumb to tiredness and fatigue as well. You can estimate how tough a designated hitter is by noticing how well he handles the game and how skilled he is in coming back after a challenge.
- Versatility. Designated hitters are usually not permitted to play defense; however, at times such as when players become injured or unavailable to play, they will have to do so. Being versatile is an important factor in keeping the designated hitter in the game.
You can get an idea of how good a designated hitter is by researching about them in sports publications, or taking a look at the statistics and descriptions printed at the back of a baseball card. You can also watch them in television or live in the stadiums to get a more realistic perception. Either way, the more you engage yourself in the sport, the more exciting your game will be, and also, the more likely it is that you will draft a winning designated hitter.
