Once in a while when that urge to go on an adventure strikes you, why not take a hike – literally? Take out your maps and find the best of the best, take a look at United States top ten hiking trails (arranged alphabetically) that you could enjoy.
- Appalachian Trail (AT). It is known to be one of the longest hiking trails in the US, and for the beautiful sight of the Appalachian Mountains. It spans about 14 states, from Georgia to Maine, and cuts through towns, rivers and roads. AT has hiker-friendly facilities, including guides, shelters and camp sites.
- Continental Divide Trail. Aptly named as it follows the continental divide, the trail extends from Canada to Mexico, and cuts through five US states: Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. It runs 5,000 miles, and is one of the longest trails in the US.
- Florida National Scenic Trail. Also known as the Florida trail, it consists of 2,300 km of footpath through wilderness and forestry. Most of the trail lies easily within an hour of most of the state’s urban areas.
- Glacier National Park. This trail is renowned for its abundant sights and scenery available including two mountain ranges, numerous beautiful lakes, waterfalls, and forests. It also boasts of rich diversity of plant and animal life.
- Grand Canyon National Park. This is perhaps one of the most famous national parks in the world. It is found in the state of Arizona, and within the park is the Grand Canyon, one of the world’s foremost natural wonders.
- Nantahala National Forest. Since it is located in North Carolina, you would be treated to the beautiful sights of the dense forestry, streams and waterfalls and varied ecosystems within; if you were looking for a rugged, ecological adventure, you would certainly find your thrill here.
- North Country National Scenic Trail. Stretching from New York to North Dakota, it is one of the longest trails in the US. Apart from completing the trail on foot, hikers could opt to ski, cycle and ride on horseback in some areas.
- Pacific Crest Trail. If you were the type who enjoys solitude and wilderness, then the Pacific Crest Trail would be to your liking. This trail extends from Canada to Mexico, spanning through Washington, Oregon and California. You would be challenged to go through rocky, mountainous terrains. Notable scenery includes the Crater Lake, North Cascades and the Ansel Adams Wilderness.
- Yosemite National Park. This internationally known trail covers about 3,081 km. It is recognized for its pristine sceneries and natural wonders, including its waterfalls and streams, granite cliffs, and most spectacularly, Giant Sequoia groves. It is also renowned for its unique soils, rock formations, narrow canyons and glaciers.
- Zion National Park. This trail is found in Utah, and it spans a little less than 600 km. Its most popular feature is Zion Canyon with its interesting soil features and geologic formations. Several trails span this park, including short and easy trails such as Weeping Rock and Taylor Creek.
