How To Adopt a Teenager

"You adopted a teenager? Are you nuts?" I have been asked that question many times. What would they say if they only knew we have adopted more than 2?

Teenagers get a bad rap. They get categorized. They get treated like thieves and liars. But the truth is, not all teens are bad. Not all teens are rebellious, angry, lazy and shifty. In fact, most of the teens you will find in today's foster care system WANT a home. They want a family, and dinner at 6 p.m., a part-time job, trips to the mall with a mom, and fishing trips with a dad. They want to be part of a real family with chores, and homework, and Christmas dinner.

How To Learn About Special Needs Adoption

If you are considering Special Needs Adoption, there are a lot of things you need to learn. You must do a lot of research and a lot of soul searching. The term Special Needs Adoption means that you will most likely be adopting an older child, a sibling group, or a child with physical and or mental disabilities. I personally am in the process of adopting three "special needs" children. Two of them form a sibling group and the third is a 15yr old.

How To Understand Child Custody Laws

Perhaps one of the hardest things to deal with at the end of a marriage is the impact that the divorce will have on the children. Even under the best of circumstances, there will be the need for both the custodial and non-custodial parent to understand the nature of their continuing responsibilities to any children they share. While it maybe very easy to grasp the ethical responsibility they continue to share in regard to the well being of the children, the task of understanding the applicable child custody laws and the legal conditions that are now part of the picture may be more difficult. Here are a few tips to help you get information that will help you unravel the mystery of child custody laws.

How To Find Online Resources for Stay at Home Moms

Because stay at home moms can feel isolated at home, it is important to seek support from friends and family to keep a link to the outside world. Since the advent of the Internet, it is now even easier to forge that link. The Internet has many resources right there at a stay at home mom's fingertips to keep her mind alert and engaged with adult subjects, while giving her a place to discuss all of the parenting issues that come up.

Search the terms "stay at home mom" and "SAHM." This is an acronym for stay at home mom, and opens up a wide variety of resources. There will be many different types of stay at home mom sites, many oriented to specific groups of stay at home moms, such as religious, ecologically minded, frugal, etc. Searching by your special interests can turn up online resources, such as CatholicMom.

How To Get Started with Adoption From China

Your family has made the decision to adopt from China. Congratulations! Now, where do you begin?

Find an agency that offers a China program. Not all agencies are licensed for China adoptions. A great place to start is by typing "China Adoption" into an online search engine. There will be many options for you to explore! China does not allow international private adoptions. You will need to use a licensed agency.

Select an agency that best fits your family's needs. Would like to use an agency that only offers a China program or multiple countries? Are you more comfortable working with a larger agency? Or smaller? Do they need to be located in your immediate geographic area? Or can they be out-of-state?
How To Find an Adoption Agency

Adopting a child can be a long process. Finding the right agency for your family is an important first step on your journey to becoming a parent through adoption.

Determine the type of adoption you wish to pursue--international or domestic. While you don't need to be absolutely certain at this stage, many agencies specialize in one or the other.

Research agencies. Online search engines are a great place to begin. Some key words that would start you on the right path would be "international adoption" or "adoption agencies."

Decide if you are more comfortable working with a large or small agency. There are pros and cons to both.

Having a baby is a major life event and therefore it requires quite a bit of preparation. From choosing an obstetrician to getting the baby's nursery ready, there will be many things on your to-do list before your baby arrives. Here are some tips to keep in mind when you are preparing to have a baby:

Get the medical details in order. Once you find out you are pregnant, call your insurance company to register for their pregnancy benefits program. Choose a highly recommended obstetrician that will deliver your baby at a hospital that you feel comfortable at. Be sure to schedule monthly prenatal visits -- even in early pregnancy, visits with the obstetrician are essential for good prenatal car. Once you have begun your prenatal visits and are into your second or third trimester, you can also pre-register at hospital, which will help to avoid a long check-in process once you are in labor.
