It's that time of year again... The time when gray hairs turn a couple shades grayer and occasionally multiply, wrinkles gain just a bit of definition, and the corners of our mouths generally droop a few extra millimeters, along with our greater countenance. Tax time.

Filing taxes is never fun, but it can be less stressful if you enlist the right support, be it in the form of a tax professional or tax software. Here's what you need to know about income tax software.

How To Pay Your Property Tax

Property tax in the United States can be divided into two categories: real and personal. Real property tax is the tax you pay on the real estate you own (the building or improvement value and site value). Personal property varies depending on where you live, but often includes belongings like stocks and bonds, appliances, tools, furniture, machinery, cars, boats and planes, among other vehicles. In some parts of the country, personal property tax applies only to mobile, business-related property.

The level of local government assessing and collecting these taxes varies depending on your locality as well. Personal property tax is commonly claimed by your state. Real property tax is assessed and claimed by a local municipality like the district, city or county.

How To Find Free Online Tax Filing Services

There are many reputable free online tax preparation and filing services. There are also many scams and schemes to get your personal information, so it is important to choose carefully when filing your taxes online, particularly through a company you are not familiar with. Following the steps below should help make the process faster and easier.

Start close to home: Many credit unions and banks have special arrangements for their members. So do local organizations for seniors, veterans, the disabled and members of certain professions. Check the statements and newsletters from these organizations around the end of the year to see what they provide.

How To File for a Tax Extension

There are many situations that may cause you to be unable to file your tax return on time. The Internal Revenue Service is aware of this and has created a procedure for people in this situation to follow. If you have a problem that keeps you from filing your return by the deadline, you can request an extension. As of 2006, the extension is six months from the original filing deadline. You may file at any time during that six months, but you MUST file by the new deadline. Remember: while nearly all extensions are granted automatically, you must follow the IRS procedure in order to get one. You can get the automatic extension a couple of different ways:
