How To Write - Lesson 4

In order to write a good poem, we first have to understand what makes a good poem.

The poem should stir an emotion - as a reader we should come away feeling happy, sad, angry, etc.

Your poem should tell a story.

It should flow and be easy to read.

To see how easy it is to create a poem that fits all the above criteria, gather a group of people around. The first person makes up the first line of a poem, the second person, the second line and so on. You can make this poem rhyming or non-rhyming, just make sure it follows the guidelines. You might want to record this or write down the lines as you go. When you are finished listen to the whole thing again and see what you've been able to accomplish. As a group you can decide on a "theme" if you like to keep it all consistent or you can have a lot of fun with it and make it a "free for all".

How To Write - Lesson 2

The two exercises today are best done in groups and will be presented that way. However, if you are doing this on your own put yourself in the listener's shoes and see if you have been thorough enough in your descriptions.

Written Charades: Objects

Below are the names of 20 objects. One person in the group should number and list each on a separate sheet of paper and fold it up. All slips of paper are drawn by group members until there are none left. Each person then writes a descriptive about the object on their paper(s). Be sure to set a time limit and my suggestion is a word limit also, perhaps 3-5 words per descriptive!

Once everyone is ready the person with the first word reads their descriptive while the rest of the group guesses. You can set your own rules, create teams, set guessing time limits or anything else you prefer! Just have fun!

How To Learn Speed Reading

Speed reading is a tool for training your brain to process large amounts of text without having to read through every word. It is a common misconception that speed readers just read faster than everyone else. Speed reading is a technique that can be learned by following these instructions. If these basic steps seem a bit too challenging at first, don't worry -- that's normal. If you're really serious about speed reading and improving your reading comprehension, I'd suggest you check out SpeedReader-X.

How To Write a How-To Book

I define a "how-to" book as one that is written by an expert or specialist in a specific field that explains to the reader exactly how to successfully perform and/or replicate a particular task, process or activity related to that field. How-to books are always non-fiction. The essence of a how-to book is a set of instructions that one can follow to complete or achieve the task, process, or activity that is being described in the book. Based on e-mails that I receive on a regular basis from aspiring how-to writers, many are intimidated by the actual writing process itself. So, what I have done in my book titled "How To Write A How-To Book (or eBook)" is to share a surefire step-by-step writing process that I have developed and fine-tuned over the last couple of decades. In fact, I started developing an early version of this process more than 20 years ago when I first found myself having to write structured reports on various subjects.

How To Return to School as an Adult

Education today has undergone a radical change, mainly as a result of technological advancement in communication methods over the past two decades. Distance education, e-learning methods, virtual universities, part-time evening study programs, and weekend courses have all allowed professionals, from corporate executives to managerial-level employees, to housewives/single mothers as well as the elderly, to enroll into school as students, at any point in their lives. The courses or modes of education undertaken vary, from short certificate courses lasting over a few weeks or months, to longer, undergraduate- or graduate-degree programs, such as Bachelors, Masters, MPhil or Doctorate (PhD), which require dedicated study spanning a few years.
