How To Use the New Article Toolbar

Those of you who have contributed HowToDoThings articles in the past will recognize the buttons you see above the Introductions, Steps and Closing text boxes. For those of you who are new to the site, click this link to learn how to use the toolbar buttons that appear, from left to right, in the toolbars.

Bold:
The Bold button allows you to bold text. Simply highlight text you have entered, and click the Bold button to make it bold. Alternately, you can click the Bold button and then add text; it will be entered in Bold until you click the button again.
Italics:
The Italics button italicizes text. Use it the same way that you would use the Bold button above.
Underline:
The Underline button allows you to underline text. Use it the same way that you would use the Bold or Italics buttons above.

We at HowToDoThings would like to introduce to you a new article-writing interface! We believe that it will simplify the process of formatting and submitting your articles. Whether you’re a brand new writer who has just submitted your application, or have contributed to HowToDoThings in the past, here are the basic steps to use this new writing interface.

To start writing an article, click “Write an Article” on your Dashboard as usual.

NOTE: You can choose the old article wizard if you would rather use it. Just click "Write an Article" and then, at the beginning of the next page, click the link that says, "Click here to use original text editor."

You can add the widget to Windows Live, your customized Google page or to Netvibes (among others). Better yet, add it to your own web page or blog. The widget will automatically update every day with a new, fresh “How To”. Here is what the widget looks like:

Our members and contributors are what makes HowToDoThings unique. Our visitors come to the site to learn how to do something from someone who has experience, and they are interested in learning about our writers. Contributors who have photos in their profile tend to have more visits to their profile pages. We also highlight our best and most active contributors on the homepage of the site and in our newsletter, and in order to be considered as the featured contributor, you must have a photo in your profile. (Note: to be selected, you must also have a minimum of 30 points, which would make you a ‘Passionate' contributor - visit the Points Explanation page to learn more about how to earn points on HowToDoThings.)

The HowToDoThings article toolbar can be a little confusing at times, so here's an explanation of how to use it!

This is the toolbar that appears above the article field when you click on "Write an Article" from your HowToDoThings contributor dashboard:

Bold, Italic and Underline. Just like the tools in a Word document or most other content management systems, you can bold, italicize or underline anything in your article. Simply highlight the word, phrase or sentence that you intend to change and then click the appropriate icon:

Read the specific instructions related to your article very carefully. You will find these at the top of the "Write an Article" page directly below the "Title" and "Status" fields.
Include any tips, warnings or links. Just beneath the "Cost" and "Difficulty" fields you will find spaces where you can add any required tools, quick tips, warnings, related links, etc. This is where you can include any additional information that may be related to your article, but is not necessarily involved in the "how to" steps.

Submitting an article to HowToDoThings is easy. However, there are a few formatting requirements that can be a little tricky until you get the hang of the system. Below is an outline of the article submission process.

In general, before you are able to submit an article, you must have a numbered list present in the article, you must have a title entered in the title field and you must choose at least on subcategory that the article fits into.
