- Beginnings. The airport was formerly known as the Buffalo Municipal Airport. Construction started in 1926, and it officially opened its doors in May 1939. In 1955, the airport was expanded to accommodate larger aircraft. In 1959, new management obtained the airport. The name was then replaced with Greater Buffalo International Airport. Over the years, more renovations took place because of the need to expand the number of air stations.
- Construction of new buildings. In 1991, new terminals were constructed, as this was more cost-effective rather than renovating the old terminals. After the construction of new terminals, the airport was reopened as the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport in 1997. After a couple of years, expansions were again made to the West Terminal of the airport. The original blue buildings were also repainted grey when the expansions were being constructed.
- Present. Today, the Buffalo International Airport has 25 gates all in all. The first runway has a length of 750 feet, and the second runway extends to 1,000 feet. The airport also has restaurants that serve bison meat. Bison is also known as buffalo meat.
