Finding a state map may seem a bit difficult, especially if it's for a state other than the one in which you live, but it's simply a matter of knowing where to look!
- Convenience stores. If you want a map for your state, simply take a trip to the nearest convenience store. They'll have a local state map, and if you live near the border of any other states, they'll likely have maps of those, too. If you are traveling to a more-distant state, you can drive until you get to that state, then stop and purchase a map, but that's a more risky adventure. You run the risk of ending up on the opposite end of the state from where you want to be!
- Tourism offices. Many tourist destinations can provide maps of the state in which they're located. To find a phone number for a tourism office, use your favorite search engine to find them online. If that doesn't produce results, try searching for a Chamber of Commerce in the state you'd like to visit.
- State government websites. The web provides many options for locating state maps. A good place to start is a state government's website. This can be accessed, for most states, by typing "www.state.gov" For example, to reach the Iowa state government's website, enter www.iowa.gov. Most government websites have pages on which you can order maps, or they will connect you to a site where you can. You may also be able to order special state maps from here, such as ones which list all parks within the state or tourist destinations.
- MapQuest. For online state maps, MapQuest is very comprehensive. You can simply enter the state for which you need a map, then MapQuest will produce an interactive map, from which you can zoom in or out, or move in different directions. It will also deliver a map, with driving directions if necessary, to your cell phone or PDA. This can be a handy feature, especially if you're lost with no idea where the nearest 7-Eleven is. MapQuest maps can also be downloaded into a printer-friendly version, so you can take it along with you when you travel.
When you are looking for state maps, be sure to get one with enough detail to help you find your destination. It doesn't help you if you get within five miles of your destination, but can't find the two-lane country road that will get you the rest of the way there!
