Whether you are fishing the flats or going 40 miles offshore, there are a few things to keep in mind when boating.  It's important to know how to stay safe. Here are some important things to consider when it comes to boating safety.

First, it is always important to make sure that all of the items that are required by the Coast Guard are aboard the boat.  Life jackets should be available for everyone on board, including several throwable, floating cushions, preferably with some sort of strap or band to make them easy to hold onto.  It is a good idea to keep these things within easy reach, in case you need them in an emergency.

Second, make sure you carry the standard required items to alert someone else in case of trouble.  An air horn is a good way to make sure someone hears you if you need them to.  A whistle is another good thing to have aboard. These are basic safety items that the Coast Guard requires in most areas.

Third, on a boat you are using a lot of different types of tackle that involve hooks.  Most people have knives for cutting bait; these can lead to cuts and puncture wounds.  It is always a good idea to have a well-stocked first aid kit containing bandaids, peroxide, butterfly bandages, and antiseptic spray.  Benadryl is another great item to have just in case of insect bites, or anaphylaxis.  Offshore is no place to suffer a severe allergic reaction. Fortunately, Benadryl is cheap and it usually works well.

Fourth, boating is a fun way to spend a vacation or a Saturday afternoon but many people drink to excess while they are boating.  The Coast Guard or Marine Patrol has become much more strict about those who operate boats while drinking alcohol. Drink responsibly or not at all.

Finally, my favorite boating safety item: the EPERB.  This stands for Electronic Positioning Emergency Radio Beacon; it works by emitting a signal if activated by you which lets the Coast Guard know exactly where you are.  The beacon's signal is picked up by a satellite and alerts the proper authorities that you need help and where to find you. This works anywhere in the world and the beacons are available in different price ranges. It does add peace of mind if you fish offshore.  Another good boating safety tip is to file a float plan with Sea Tow.  This is a company that will come and rescue you for a fee, and will keep your float plan on file if it is needed.
