We all know the dreaded feeling of waking up the day after a vacation with a scratchy throat or an inability to stop sneezing. The culprit is very often not our travel destination, but our travel method: the airplane. Being shut up in a small space with many other people seems like an inevitable path to viruses. But it doesn't have to be! Here are some ideas on how to avoid getting sick from air travel.

  1. Eat well. It's easy to live on junk food in an airport, but sugary, fatty foods will slow you down and hamper your immune system. Although it may not be easy, try to eat balanced meals while traveling.
  2. Drink plenty of water. Most people don't drink enough water anyway, but we need even more water on an airplane, as the air is much dryer in that environment. Instead of getting alcohol, coffee, or soda, try to drink only plain water, and plenty of it. This will make you feel better and aid your immune system in fighting germs.
  3. Get plenty of rest. How many of us have stayed up all night packing and getting ready for an early flight? This is one of the worst things you can do to your immune system. Not getting enough rest means that you are setting yourself up for an illness.
  4. Relax. Stressing yourself out is very easy to do while traveling, but not at all helpful to your health. Try to breathe deeply, stretch, think calming thoughts, read a good book, or listen to soothing music.
  5. Wash your hands thoroughly. Remember your mother's advice? Wash your hands with warm to hot water, and soap, lathering well and scrubbing for at least thirty seconds. When leaving the bathroom, think about the fact that not everyone is following this advice, and use a paper towel to open the door.
  6. Carry hand sanitizer. Although many people nowadays go overboard on the hand sanitizer, an airplane is a place that you definitely want to carry it. After you touch the same tray table or armrest that many, many people before you have touched, you might be glad that you have it with you.
  7. Keep your hands away from your face. Remember, germs enter through the mouth, nose, and eyes, so don't let them have a chance!
  8. Turn on your air vent. Some scientists think that the air vents could actually help push germs away from you. Hey, it can't hurt to try it! You can also try the personal air filters that are available for sale.

It is easy to avoid germs while flying. In addition, if you treat your body well, you will be much more likely to enjoy your vacation, or your time back at home. Happy flying!
