A passport is your most important ticket to travel and identification. It can serve as a valid I.D. in all the places you can go. A passport from your local government contains basic information about yourself and the places you have traveled.   • Determine where you stand regarding your passport. Have you applied for a passport, or applied for passport renewal? If you have not applied for a passport yet, you can file an application at your nearest passport agency, local court or post office. You can also apply at a library if your nearest library offers this service. You need passport pictures to file for an application, which you can get at any photo booth or photography shop. The photo booth or the photography shop should have a standard size and white background color for your photo available.
  • If you have an expired passport, you can apply for passport renewal by getting a DS-82 form and filling it up for submission to a passport agency. The passport agency should have a copy of the DS-82 form in their office. You need to have two new passport pictures attached to your DS-82 form.
  • Make a call. If you want to check your passport status, you can call the National Passport Information call center. The number to call is 877-487-2778. This number connects you with an automated teller that can check your passport status for you on weekends. If you prefer talking to a call center agent or operator, you can call the same number, Monday to Friday, at 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. They also have a number for individuals who have hearing impairments. Whether you plan to travel soon or simply want to have a passport handy, you can apply for a passport and check its processing status using the steps above. Passport processing takes about four to six weeks. If you want to hurry the process along, you can pay $60 to expedite your passport renewal process. Your passport is one of the most important documents you can get for valid identification and for traveling purposes. Without a valid passport, you cannot travel to other countries or cross other states since the local authorities check for it upon your arrival. Make sure you keep your passport in a safe place. Losing your passport means having to report to the authorities and getting a new one, and this takes another four to six weeks. Upon receiving your passport, make sure you make Xerox copies of the document and keep them in a secure place.
