Whether you are on a long drive, road-trip or just stuck in traffic, nothing beats boredom as much as finding road signs that are just plain funny or sometimes even flat out ridiculous. The road is often filled with these types of road signs, just waiting to be discovered.
For you to find funny road signs, of course you have to be on the highway. Make sure to bring your trusted camera to capture the funny road sign moments, and follow these simple tips on your way to road sign hunting.
- Drive Safely. This is priority number one. Although you are looking for funny road signs, make sure that you are also looking for the non-funny (correct) ones.
- Have your camera ready. Bring out your camera and be ready to shoot; you never know when you are going to pass by these funny signs. Also, assign someone other than the driver to take the pictures.
- Know what to look for. You can't really spot wrong (and funny) road signs if you don't know the right ones. So familiarize yourself with the basic road signs, so you can find discrepancies and funny ones more easily.
- Explore. If you're not in a hurry to get to your destination, try using a different route. This will increase your chance of finding something funny and new. Routes that pass by schools, churches, monuments, construction sites and the like have more signs than your regular main road route.
- Be vigilant. Funny things aren't just found on road signs. Be on the lookout for all types of signs or writing like billboards, fast food signs, and even neon signs.
Here are some common types of incorrect (and funny) road signs that you could watch out for:
- Wrong Spellings. These are more commonly found on handwritten signs on shops along the street, like "Turdles for Sale". You can find some of these on official road signs as well, but they are harder to come by.
- Unclear Drawings. Some signs don't have words in them, just drawings. Some of which aren't quite made well enough to get the right message across. These are usually found on bridges, pedestrian lanes and even the subway.
- Wrong Grammar. Also commonly found on handwritten signs on shops. One example is, "Sorry, road is close." It sounds right (since the road is right there and is "close" after all!) but obviously, they meant "road is closed."
- Too Obvious. There are some signs that give the correct advice or warning, but are a bit too obvious or unnecessary. Like a "No Biking on the Subway tunnel" sign.
- Misplaced signs - Some road signs might have been installed at the wrong locations. One example is a "No Parking" and a "Paid Parking" sign on the same post.
- Establishment/Shop Signs. Some establishment owners think of the funniest things to name their businesses. Try looking for funny shop names like a hair salon named "Curl Up and Dye" or a flower shop called "Petal Attraction."
- Contradiction. There are also signs that confuse you instead of help you. One example is a sign that says "Entrance Only - Do not enter here" on a parking entrance.
- Funny town names. Aside from funny road signs, you can also spot funny and silly town names while on the road.
There are more types of funny roads signs aside from the ones mentioned above. Just keep your eyes open, and you are bound to find one sooner rather than later. Now what do you do when you spot a funny sign? Take a picture, and then submit them to Flickr or to popular humor websites like Zug.
