Some countries are stricter in their control of immigration and anything that might pose as a potential criminal threat to their citizens, and therefore they require more than just passports for people from outside the country's borders to enter. The rewards enjoyed by these countries for their vigilance is usually felt by visitors as an added annoyance instead of a sense of public safety. But to go to these countries that require visas, there’s no other way but to obtain one. A few requirements needed for you to obtain a visa are your passport, a visa application form and several passport-sized photos of yourself. You can download a visa application form from either a visa center’s web site or the country’s own. Some countries also require proof of immunization, so you might think about checking up on whether or not the country you hope to enter requires it, and you can carry your immunization records with you. When you have all these items, then it’s time to take care of your passport.

This is what you have to do:

  1. Decide what type of visa you need, whether tourist, student, worker or diplomatic. The type of visa affects your status in that country, the length of time you are allowed to visit, and also whether or not you’re allowed to find some limited or full-time employment while you’re there. Those who look for employment might need a temporary work permit visa. The most common type of visa is the tourist visa, which normally allows you to stay from two weeks up to a year depending on the country. In some countries, a student who will only be studying for three months or less can choose to apply for a tourist visa.
  2. Send your passport to a visa service center by mail or in person or directly to the country’s embassy for processing. It is sometimes possible to obtain a tourist visa for a short period of stay (three months or less) completely online, but you shouldn’t consider doing this if you’re planning on staying longer. The rules concerning this might also be different depending on the country you wish to enter.
  3. Fill out the visa application and keep your passport-sized photos close by, because you might be asked to provide one or several of these to the embassy. You will also be charged a fee before you can obtain your visa. You can pay with a money order, checks, and debit cards or with credit cards like MasterCard or Visa. If you’re thinking of using a gift card or a Visa black card, read what the visa service agency has to say in their bulletin first in case they do not accept that mode of payment.
  4. When your visa has been approved, it will be stamped or attached as a document in your passport. Get it as soon as you can to maximize the time allowed to you. Also, to avoid unnecessary complications, it’s a good idea to look at the expiration date of your passport to be certain of its validity for the entire length of your stay.

Visas usually come as single or multiple entries, allowing you a single entry into a country or multiple ones, respectively. Visas can only be used for the stated time window open for your stay. Remember that, while you can use a multiple entry visa to enter a country several times, you can only do so within that set period of time while your visa lasts. If it expires, then it’s time for you to apply for another one.
