The best way to improve your chances of surviving a plane crash are to pay attention to various safety precautions as soon as you board the plane. Here are some tips on how to stay safe during a plane crash.

Plane crash statistics actually reveal some good news. Approximately four out of five plane crashes have no fatalities thanks to personnel and passengers who paid attention to various safety precautions both before and during the flight. Only 1 in 13 million people who fly become fatalities due to the crash of a commercial airliner.

Plan your wardrobe to survive a plane crash, which means wearing flat comfortable shoes with leather soles and closed toed-shoes, along with natural fabrics such as cotton or silk rather than polyester which can catch fire and cause burns to the skin.

As soon as you are comfortably situated in your seat, take a moment to read through the safety card located in the seat pocket directly in front of your seat. It's there for one important reason - for you to read it and familiarize yourself with the type of aircraft you are flying aboard, as well the nearest safety exits and other safety features on that particular style of airplane.

Pay attention prior to take-off to the flight attendant's explanation of where to find your seat cushion flotation device, how to obtain your oxygen mask should there be an unexpected decrease in cabin pressure during the flight, and how to locate the nearest exit should an evacuation become necessary due to an emergency landing or crash. The reason for reviewing this information ahead of time is that there will be less hesitation in carrying out life-saving procedures if you have reviewed these procedures ahead of time.

It is especially important that you understand how to operate the over-wing exits if you are sitting in that particular aisle of the plane and would be required to open the exits in the event of an emergency crash landing. If you do not feel comfortable accepting that responsibility, ask the flight attendant to move you to another seat prior to take-off. Smoke inhalation is one of the biggest threats once an airliner has crashed and evacuating the plane in a quick and orderly fashion could mean the difference between life and death for both you and other passengers.

If you have a choice of seating, choose a seat nearest the exit door, the wing exit aisle or an aisle seat, which statistically have proven to be the best locations from which to quickly exit an aircraft.

Panic and being unprepared kill more people than trauma or smoke inhalation in an airline disaster. So plan ahead to mentally prepare how to save yourself and others in the event of an emergency crash landing.
