Any trip to France is incomplete without visiting the Louvre. As much as Paris is known for fashion so it is also known for the Louvre Museum. The Louvre museum is centrally located on the right bank of Seine. It is housed inside the Louvre Palace. The Louvre Palace is an ancient and historic monument. It was earlier a fortress and some parts are still intact. The Louvre Museum opened on 10 August 1793. At that time it had merely 537 paintings and 184 other art objects. Now the size has grown to more than 35,000 paintings and about 380,000 objects belonging right from the 6th BC to today's age. The objects displayed today are divided into 8 different categories. These are the Egyptian Antiques, Near Eastern Antiques, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiques together, Islamic Art work, Sculptures, Decorative Arts, Paintings, and Prints and Drawings. The Louvre museum is the world's most frequently visited museum with more than 12000 visitors every day.
Structurally the Louvre Museum is very beautiful and reminiscent of ancient French architecture style. Its beauty is now enhanced by the addition of the Louvre Pyramid. It is a huge glass pyramid situated in the center of the large palace complex directly above the visitor's center.
The works that are displayed in the museum contain some of the world's best and rarest objects. The most famous is the paintings collection. Paintings by great artists like Raphael, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci are amongst the most famous ones. Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa attracts a majority of visitors while his Virgin and Child, St. John the Baptist, and Madonna of the Rocks are also equally famous. The Fortune Teller and Death of the Virgin are amongst the works of Caravaggio displayed there.
Though the Louvre Museum is famous for its paintings the other objects displayed there are equally grandiose and awe inspiring. The Egypt antiques contain objects right from the time of the Nile civilization. Near Eastern antiquities contain Sumerian and Mesopotamian artifacts. Objects from the Neolithic period are present in the Greek, Etruscan and Roman section. The Islamic arts are also many and varied. Sculptures include famous ones like those by Michelangelo. Decorative Arts and Prints and Drawings also contain very good art pieces.
The Louvre Museum has become even more famous since its mention in the fictional book, The Da Vinci Code. The Louvre Museum is truly a great place to be experienced at leisure.
