How To Make Cheesy Bread Animals

Ingredients:
For Animals

  • 250 g (8 oz) strong plain flour, plus a little to dust
  • 1/2 (1/2 tbsp) sachet fast action dried yeast
  • 1/2 tsp honeypinch of cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • approx 150 ml (1/4 pint) warm water
  • 60 g (2 oz) grated mature cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp grated parmesan

To decorate

  • 1 egg, beatencurrants
  • sesame seedspoppy seeds
  • grated cheddar cheese

Directions:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees C / 400 degrees F / gas 6.

  • Sift the flour into a mixing bowl. Stir in the yeast, honey, cayenne pepper and mustard powder, add just enough water to form a soft dough.
  • Transfer to a floured surface and knead lightly for about 5 minutes to make a smooth dough. Gradually knead in the grated cheeses to the dough.
  • Shape the dough into 6 animal figures and transfer to a lightly floured baking sheet. Cover them loosely with a tea-towel and leave to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Brush with beaten egg and add currants for eyes, sprinkle the tops with the seeds of your choice (sesame or poppy) and the grated cheese.
  • Transfer to the oven and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Leave on a wire rack to cool.
