Hey everyone, I am Eric Rochow and this is Real World Green, more on greening your Christmas. It's freezing out here. What I want to talk about today is your Christmas tree. There is a growing trend toward artificial Christmas trees and artificial Christmas trees are not very green at all. It's slightly green, you know what I mean. But they are made from plastic and plastic is made from petroleum which is a non-renewable resource and also plastic Christmas trees are not recyclable. Harvested Christmas trees like this, like the kind you see in your regular little tree lot are actually quite green. They do a number of things. First of all, trees are farmed that we don't go out into the Virgin forest and cut down Christmas trees. So we are not damaging an Eco system. We are actually raising much like people raise soybeans or raise Corn. So you are helping a farmer make a living. Also, they preserve open space. This is a small tree lot here. If the farmer could have make a living raising in these trees, he might sell this small lot and someone would build a house on it, so that's less open space. And my hands are freezing. There is a growing towards organic, raising organic Christmas trees which is a great thing. All farmers are using integrated pest management practices. So this is all good. It's okay to buy this kind of tree. You can also try buying a live tree. It's very difficult to keep them in dormancy and it's a whole thing I could go into. But it's alright to go buy a regular tree. Trying buying from a local farmer or a small town guy that you know about, make it all good, alright. So have a great holiday, come to the Green House. Tell me what you think, green-house.tv I will see you.
