DOT Gun Disarming - review

You can see that this isn't about the technique. We have practiced some specific techniques as the framework within which you can practice the concepts of the circle, I think that is the most important thing and hopefully, you have realized that. You have got to get inside that circle. You have got to stay there. How you get there and how you hang on and how you take the gun away, I don't want to say any material. Remember, the only reason you are doing this is because what was going to happen anyway, you are going to die, alright. Always keep that in mind; you are going to die anyway. So you can't go wrong in your attempt to save your life. We tend to fight with our partners too much, there is a happy meeting there. You want to offer some resistance so that you would not just again putting you both in that obliging partner syndrome thing but you have to keep in mind that we are not actually hitting each other. So it's real easy when I just do this for her to roll her wrist over on me but it wasn't real easy when I clock in the head even with headgear on. Okay it stuns you and I do this thing where I tell people, I say, “Okay, keep your arm straight, keep your wrist straight. Don't let me bend your wrist and your arm in chicken head block things.” And then I go bang and I clock people underneath and then around pull you and right out. They said, “Hey, I told you not to.” “Well, I wasn't step on your knee.” Okay, well out on the street, they are going to be the ones surprised. They are the ones with the gun. Like I said, when it goes off, they should be shocked and startled. If you ask what if, you are asking me to answer your question. If you start thinking for yourself and ask yourself if then what's happening is you are going to start forcing yourself to answer that question yourself. A good example is and a simplest level is I have had people, a woman of self-defense class, where I say I am doing palm heel strikes. I am doing palm heel strikes; boom, boom and now it's going to -- but what if he grab your arms. They want me to answer that question for them. Instead I tell them, “Okay well, if he grabs your arms then what could you do.” Then they start saying, “okay well, if he grabs my arms then I can, I could do this, I could do that, I could do this, I could do that.” So then they start answering their own question. Now I am kind of avoiding -- some people say, “Hey, you are avoiding answering my question but what if they got you pinned up against the wall” or the better one was, “if he's got get you by the strove and he is got a gun at your head.” I have had situations where we are doing like how to break out of a headlock, how to break out of a chokehold and this happens when I do my women self-defense classes quite a bit and I'll say, “Okay, what if he is got you -- what if you are on the ground and your legs across and they got one of your arms up here and they got an arm around you, they say, “What do you mean? Show me what do you mean.” So I like this and I started down, they say, yeah, yeah, yeah. So after five minutes there, now what would you do. Well the answer to that is nothing. I can't do anything at this point; I can't get out of this. What if get into a something which is no, no what I am telling you it doesn't work in here is why. Yes, no but what if and then I say, “Now, let go off me.” And then after I am on myself and stand backup and I say, “You stand there, I will stand here.” “Go ahead, get me like that.” So unfortunately, sometimes the answer to it, well if somebody has got you bend over in a nice rear choke with gun at your head, your time for action has gone by. Does that make sense? Sometimes unfortunately that's the answer. Don't get there and what I say that was bad and worse. You just went from bad to worse. Do something while it's bad, alright; don't wait till it gets worse to you're in extremis when you are in position where you can't do anything. Like I have mentioned, what if you give them your money and then they say, “Okay, turn around and get on --” They were this close, the gun was close enough that if you had that little voice in your head said, he is going to kill me anyway, you could have grab the gun, try to save -- do something to save your life. Instead, now he is three feet behind you and you are on your knees and you go like this and your hand go. The gun comes like on your head, what do you are going to do? I tell what you are going to do. You are going to die, alright. So again, you can be in positions where you cannot do anything but die. Don't let that happen.
