Oh, hi! Nathan here. In this village of lovely New York City. You know, I was lucky enough to be raised by a total of five parents. But some people do not have that opportunity and the kids they do not come in all shapes and sizes, ages, ethnicities, races, etcetera and sometimes certain people have the opportunity to become a foster parent.
So, you are probably asking yourself, you know. Do I have what it takes to become a foster parent? I cannot answer that question for you because I do not know what state you live in, etcetera and these type of things really vary depending on where you live.
But here is some general information about the types of things that they will probably ask you about. First of all, you need space for the kid. If you have a spare bedroom then you are more likely to be able to get a foster child. If you have three kids living in one bedroom, then you are less likely. You need to have a stable income because raising a child can be expensive.
Now, of course you can ask me, that much information about what your foster kid is going to be like because they cannot say like, Oh, you know his name is Dan. He is 14 and he comes from Boise. Because every foster child is different.
Now keep in mind, a foster parent is caring for a child in crisis or in transition, so a lot of the children that are in this situation could be a handful. It can be a lot of work for you as a foster parent because they may have behavioral problems, they may be completely pleasant, they may be any number of things.
So, you are probably asking yourself too, how long is this child going to be staying with me? Again, it really depends on the situation but there was a law passed in 1997, which were basically states that the goal of the state agencies that handle this, is to find an adoptive home for the kid as fast as possible. So, if this is something that you want to get into for the long term, maybe you want to think about being an adoptive parent.
So, there you have it, some information about becoming a foster parent. What it takes and things you can expect. Again, this is a type of thing you really want to talk to your local agency that handles adoption and foster parenting because they are the ones that would give you the most specific information but I hope that this was helpful and that you had a nice time.
