Using Plants To Create Outdoor Rooms One landscape idea that's getting a lot of attention these days is outdoor rooms. More and more people are starting to enjoy the practical benefits of dividing their yards into discrete spaces.

[Music Playing] Well outdoor rooms are all the rage these days and in order to create and outdoor room of course you need some walls. What better way to build the wall than to use natural plant materials. One of the walls that were here near today is a boxwood hedge. This is just a very simple boxwood and they have let it grow together in order to form this great screen. Notice that it is not any higher than I am so the wall itself is about the same height; say as about my chest level. That enables you to see over the wall so you do not feel like you are totally enclosed. So again, boxwood but entirely different, this time it is higher than I am. I am not that tall but nonetheless, this is probably about 6 ½ or 7 feet high. You do not want to see what is on the other side of this. You have created a room filling here where you are very isolated. This is more of a private area, more to sit and relax; contemplate unlike the other area where you wanted to see over the particular hedge that we were looking at. Let us say that you have a wall and you want to increase the height of the wall but you do not want building another wall. Here is an interesting thing that you can do. The wall here is about 3 feet tall, but then we have put this gram blonde boxwoods on top of there to give the wall more height, more stature. It also gives the wall some life and this gram blonde boxwood would actually stay green all winter long will also gives you winter interests as well. Notice they are not completely butted up against each other. They actually have some gap between them which again enables you to see through to the other room so that it gives you the feeling that you have a little bit more space. Sometimes you do not even need a full wall of plants in order to create the delineation between two different rooms. Here we have this great yew, it is a very vertical growing yew and this particular variety grows upright like this so as have been proven to be nice and tight and this is the demarcation between two different rooms. You have a room with a little bit of a water feature and then you have a room that is basically a beautiful perennial flower garden with this great yew sort of saying welcome in to the other garden. So today on growingwisdom.com, we have taken some plants, mostly boxwoods and some yews and created rooms in an outdoor space. You can do the same thing on a patio so you do not need a huge yard to do this. You could do it by using containers and growing some of these plants and containers and moving the containers around to create walls, to create special rooms.
