There are two ways to do it. One requires a special tool and the other way is a little bit more labor intensive but I bet you got what you need.
One way to do it, of course is to use a circular saw and a wood chisel and a hammer. What you have to do is take your circular saw and you adjust the blade depth to the depth that you want the groove.
Typically, it is maybe a quarter of an inch, so marked the width of the groove that you want to do and you could do that two ways. You can either trace the piece of wood that you are going to slip into the groove or just use a tape measure and a framing square.
Start to cut a number of parallel cuts in the groove with your circular saw making various courses what will happen is you have to make you six or seven a day. You will find out that you can take the wood chisel and clip out the wood and it will pop out very, very simply.
Finally, go ahead and take the wood chisel and ply out any high spots that are left inside the groove. The simpler way of course is that to use a router. A router is a simple tool get the right sides bit; a particular one for this job is three quarter and an inch wide. Go ahead set the adjustments, turn it on, slide it down a framing square that is clamp into a piece of wood and you are good to go.
Well, as you can see a router really makes the job easy it is more precise you get a better cut. You can get routers at a home center or a tool run o place. Make you sure you are careful because the bits are sharp. It is that simple.
