David Epstein: Welcome to this week’s edition of Growing Wisdom and today we are going to be talking about some Tall Perennials. Now, this add a couple things, one is they add a dramatic flare to your garden, no question about it. They also add obviously height, the first that we are going to talk about here is called is Choreopsis Tripteris and Tripteris is very tall over 5 to 6 feet tall, beautiful yellow flowers and the flowers looks spectacular.
And this will stay really great; you want put this somewhere obviously in the back of the garden. Another really neat plant is Angelica and now what we are showing you today, has the seed pad so it is already have gone by but what is interesting about it are the seed pads. They are neat, they are brown, and they contrast very nicely against the stem of this plant. The plant is atleast seven feet tall and it looks great in the garden.
You could leave this up all winter, the seeds will start seeding around your garden, so if you do not want that, you have to cut this down after some flowering. But, I like to leave them up.
Another interesting plant is Silphium. I am thinking about putting this right along side of my road, because of how tall it is and how it will provide a little bit of a screen.
This is probably one of the taller plants in terms of perennials that we find in the Northeast, great yellow flowers, wonderful leaves, and look how tall this plant is. It is absolutely fantastic. Your Pie Weed is one of those plants that again gets really tall about six to seven feet tall, it has huge seed heads on them and the purple color is wonderful. It attracts butterfly in the masses and bees as well.
Another one is a Thalictrum, some of these are natives but the particular one you are looking at is not, it is a little bit taller than the native but again this is beginning to go by, you can see the purple flowers but you can also see how sort of lose this is. And it is very lazy and adds sort of daintiness even though it is really tall to the garden. Ironweed is really wonderful.
Let us take a look at it, Ironweed that we have here today, one is white and one is purple, these will get extremely tall, they do not need staking at all and they flower for quite a long time. Generally about four weeks give or take a couple weeks and it will depend on the weather.
And then, we will cut it back all the way to the ground late in the fall, once it is done blooming and up it comes again five or six feet all in one season, so lots of tall plants for you to think about in this week at GrowingWisdom.com.
Come back and check out all of our tips we update at least three times a week.
