Hello loyal Indy Mogulers, this week we’re paying homage to one of our favorite cult classic films, The Evil Dead. During production Director Sam Raimi developed a shaky can, and we’re going to show you how to make one too. Erik Beck is a trained professional who know the tools he’s using. You could easily explode, dismember, or kill yourself while attempting to recreate these projects if you misunderstand and/or don’t follow our instructions exactly. If you don’t know what you’re doing find someone that does to help out, and if you’re under 18 get the supervision of an adult. Be as safe as you are creative, and enjoy the show! For those of you who don’t know, The Evil Dead was written and directed by Sam Raimi, a.k.a. the guy who directed all of the Spiderman Films, event the third one. When they were shooting The Evil Dead they didn’t have a lot of money so, just like us they had to improvise. They created some really cool DIY camera rigs. And today we’re going to show you how to build and use one of the more simple one’s, the shaky cam. Shopping List A Scrap piece of wood about five inches wide and three feet long, some random nuts and bolts some thing his handles and a quarter inch crew with matching wing knot. Stay Tuned! Super Time Lapse This is an easy built like super easy. First step is to figure out what you’re going to use for handles or if you want handles that off. For me I found these old work light stands and decided to bolt them on. Just make sure they are very securely mounted to the wood. You don’t want your handles breaking off when your camera is attached. Next, you need to locate a center of your rig and in this spot, drill a hole for your camera mounting screw. I also use the whole saw bit and it chisel to create a small resist but that is optional. Place your camera on top of the shaky cam and using your quarter inch screw and wing nut, secure the camera likes so now you’re ready to shoot. The shaky cam be operated by one or two, we found that was most effective when use by two people at slow speeds then speed up and post. Try imagining the camera as a little plane, flying doing your scene making deeps and turns. You can also use this rig to run behind your actor’s imitator rushing the manic force. Either way like the name implies your footage is going to be shaky. It’s a very quick and dirty rig so, if you’re looking for a smoother shoot makes sure and check out our dolly tutorial. Now go forth and kill some dead.
