Today, I’ll show you how to plant large pots or some people would say half whiskey barrels.
To start off, with a nice quality pot, it can be ceramic, plastic, it can be wood. It doesn’t matter. Just make sure that there’s good drainage in the bottom. And you start off by putting a layer of rocks that will allow the water to seep through the soil to the bottom and then drain out.
Next, I fill it about three quarter of the way full of soil. It doesn’t have to be real good quality soil because our top soil is going to be up in about the top eight inches of the pot. Well then put in some good fresh potting mix. I like to leave about two inches or so from the surface of the pot so if there’s plenty of room to put water. The nice thing about planting a barrel like this is you can do it in any way you like.
Personally, I like to start with something tall like this spike. And I’ll put it in the back and then I’ll center the middle with this red geranium and then I’ll plant alyssum and various petunias around the outside. In about six weeks, this pot will just be covered with flowers and finally we’ll water them all in really well.
Now, the thing about pots versus being planted directly in the ground is they require a lot more water. So, you’ll need to water these pots at least two or three times a week as needed.
