There are lots of different wheel and tire systems in the market for mountain bikes and I am going to go through now how to install and remove up the different tire systems, tubeless and non tubeless. The UST tubeless system consists of a few particular things that are special, the rim as a valley you can see here there is a cut away, there is the valley then it has this ledge and then it has a little hump that is right there. That is what supposed to lock the bead at the tire. Since it's a French invention, it’s actually called the 'ub'.
There is an extra flap of rubber on the tire bead that flaps over the edge of that 'ub'. Then when there is air pressure in here presses that against the little hump and it locks the air out. All tube less systems have some sort of a valve stem that seals into the rim. You want to use the valve stem intended for the rim that you have, because it will be shaped like the rim valley. I am going to install this into the rim. The only way air can get out through here is if it gets around the valve stem. So I'll just level of security -- this is a latex base solution from stems and I just put a little of that on the valve stem and then I know that no air is going to get out there. Then obviously have to orient it so it lines up properly, so then old ring goes up against the rim.
This is a presto valve. You can then screw this part on. You put one more old ring on and then you screw this part on. This is the UST tire, its Hutchinson Scorpion and there is the UST logo, UST tubeless logo, it also has this Nagesti logo. So it will work on the other another Nagesti tubeless system. This tire has the little extra flap here to seal over the hump and it's got a lot of extra rubber here to make the casing air proof. This is standard tire; the casing is more supple because there is less rubber in it. It just has a standard bead, there is little extra thin amount of mould fleshing here on here but the actual edge of the bead is very narrow. And then you can see the cords and everything. This is a standard tire; they made no effort to make it, make the tire casing itself be air proof.
Makes it easier to mount the tire on the UST system, if use some soapy water on the rim and the tire bead the water will help seal the edge. You also want to determine your tire orientation before you install it. The normal front wheel -- you can just switch this skewer around and turn it around however you want. For disc one, the disc is going to be on the left side. The first side you don't have to worry too much because that side is usually pretty easy to push on to the rim. For the second side, on the side opposite the valve stem, you kind of try and get this up out of the way. So that it leaves the rim valley open for this second bead to fall into it. So now starting this side opposite the valve stem. I am going to push on the second bead.
You always finish at the valve stem because the valve stem is filling that rim valley and it would prevent you from being able to drop the bead into the valley if you were finishing on the opposite side and then you push it over. That's a good idea to put a little more water again if it's gotten dry as you have been doing this.
Before you ride you of course want to check the pressure and I have gone to very high pressure in order to get the beads to pop up on the rim. So this is now at 50 psi which is too high. The advantage of the tubeless system is that then you can run the tire at lower pressure and not ever have to worry about pinch flap because there is no tube to pinch. This is 29 pounds that's where I leave it and light weight people can get away with maybe 18 pounds, 20 pounds. And it does give you better grip especially on side hills and it absorbs small bumps into the tire which means that you have lower rolling resistance because the whole bike isn't bouncing up and down every time.
So that's where I am going to leave it. And go ride that. What I need to do to get it off is push it off the rim on the opposite side from the valve. And so I can get there and now I have finally
