Female: Hey there all you Eco-Threadheads. Welcome to our Earth Day Special. Male: All right so we know the big day was early on in the week but there is no way we are going to let it go by a notice. Female: First up, we are taking a ride with the guys behind the wearable collection project. It is a simple concept that is changing lives in a big way. Male: Let’s take a look. Male: I am Michael Cyril. I am Adam Baruchowhitz. We are from Wearable Collections. We are a clothing recycling company. We place pins inside residential buildings in New York City in order to create funds for charity and keep them out of the landfills. Male: When at the stop. Male: We accept clothing, shoes, handbags, belts, linens, towels, and last but not least Rock and Roll. Male: Yes. Male: One of the stimulus of this idea was that one of our partners was hit by a car in Delancey Street and paralyzed and so we were always looking ways for research. Our main charity is the Miami project for paralysis. Male: We also work with the Council and the Environment for New York City which is a great organization that was trying to increase recycling by 25% within the next year. One of the great events that we are working with them on is we just gave about a ton and half of clothing to about 15 kids. They redesigned it all in different fashion and it is going be judged. Male: They are currently in around 30 buildings right now. Male: I bit my case is probably I would say about 400 pounds of clothing and I can fill up as much as twice a week this shirt maybe on its way to Africa. Male: If you are interested in getting your building in tomorrow just go www.wearablecollections.com and we have forms on this site where you could submit your building and we will contact you or a resident manager or whoever is in charge and try to get a collection program to start it in your building. Male: Organizations looking to raise funds, school, church, whatever you maybe. We work with you to help you raise money for your organization. Male: We really believe that the way of the future is converting what New Yorkers may consider garbage into useful items for other people. Male: All right so a lot of you had been asking what do I do with my old my t-shirts. This week inspired by Earth Day. We are going to show you how to make it quick and easy picnic blanket backpack. Female: For this project you need 10 old t-shirts. A big thanks to Threadless for hooking it up with a bunch of their old damaged shirts. Take out one of the shirt and measure it 12 inch by 15 inch rectangle and pin the front and back layers together. Use a straight edge to connect your points, cut of the square, and you will have two equal rectangles. Repeat with seven more shirts for a total of 16 squares. Place two squares along sides together, pin down one side and sow. I am going to use my new Serger but if you do not have one use a small zigzag stitch and cut the extra fabric from the scene. Continue connecting squares so you end up with four rows of four squares. Now sow all your rows of four together and sow a seam around the entire thing. Blanket a portion of the bag. When we return I will show you how to connect your flap and back straps so do not go anywhere. [commercial] Welcome back. All right now that the blanket piece is done take out a large graph and cut two straps that are 20 inches by four inches. Serge or sow around the edge of both straps then cut a rectangle measuring by 12 by 10 inches. Finish the helm on that rectangle, now lay the blanket right side up. Fold in two sides then fold it in half. Now fold it up from the bottom square by square. Pin your rectangle piece to the very back panel. Flip it over and mark where the ties go. Open it all up again and pin your straps to the appropriate panel. Use a straight stitch to attach your flap and two straps. Make two holes in the flap then cut 220 by two inch strips and sow around the edges. Now sow the strips to the appropriate panel using the straight stitch. So you maybe asking yourself what are they going to do with all these scraps. Simple, we are going to make a pillow. Just start by cutting scraps and the smaller strips then cut two more 12 by 15 inch squares. Serge around three sides, stuff it with your scraps and sow the fourth seam. Now just hold it up inside the blanket and tie it up and go get yourself some nature. Male: Welcome back. Female: So about a month ago Kayla emailed and invited us to her high school to participate in an Eco-Fashion Show she was putting together. Male: So we have to board a train to Connecticut and check it out. Female: My name is Kayla Voncheck. I am 17-years-old and I go to North Haven High School. Last year I took an AP Environmental Science class and after learning about how important sustainability is to our environment I decided to do an independent study project for this year with my final project being this fashion show. So I started asking my friends if they wanted to help by modeling or in back stage. Everybody will be done in five minutes. Okay. And I also started contacting designers throughout the world and seeing if they would be willing to do any clothing or accessories and they all responded by saying that this was a great project and they were really happy seeing a high school student doing this. After the show there is going to be an action where everyone who came can bid on all the clothing and accessories shown and all the profits from the bids will then be sent to the club. One day, I hope to open my own store that sells eco-friendly clothing by tons of local designers and hopefully make some of my own as well. This is my final project. Hopefully by people seeing this fashion show people will see that it is really easy to go green and do all instead of just finding your regular clothes and that we are the future generation and if the world continues the way and we will not have a great world. Female: I am thinking A+++++. Male: I did not know there are some eco-friendly products like you know. If I see something that fits my style, I will definitely buy something organic. Male: Today was fruition of a lot of great work and obviously all our intentions attained through but I could not be more proud of it.
