Hey everyone and welcome to our second special Mogul Week Episode. This week, we are going to the dark murky territory of the fish man and showing you how to make some awesome and cheap prosthetics. So last mogul week, we tackled the heavily requested topic of swamp monsters. It was hot, everybody wanted swamp monster so we turned Steve into this and it was great. But it turns out some of you wanted more of a fish man than a swamp thing so it is time for Steve to get back into the make-up chair and you, to get what you want. For this build, we are going to need a lump of clay, an ugly pair of sunglasses, some latex sheeting, scrap quarter inch of foam, a Styrofoam head and bald cap and some liquid latex. [Commercial] For our budget we cannot afford to make a full body fish suit so we are going to focus on the face and hands and for this fish man make-up, I have decided to go with the different approach, instead of building up a ton of nose putty on Steve’s face, I have decided to make a clay model of our fish man face then create a thin latex appliance from that. Do not be scared it is actually pretty easy. Step 1: Take your Styrofoam head and using some clay build up the basic shape for our fish man face. Do not forget to fill in around the nose area then you can move in for some detail. Notice the tilted eyes, lack of a nose and protrusions on the cheeks, brows and the side of the mouth. Fish people have smooth skin so your fish sculpture should too. Step 2: Our next step is to add a thin layer of liquid latex, I found that a cheap children’s water color brush works pretty good. The idea here is to apply several thin and even layers on to the clay face. You need to wait until each layer is completely dry before applying the next. The wait time for me was about 15 to 20 minutes. On the last several layers, I dyed the liquid latex green with some food coloring. On the second to the last layer, I actually painted on some green colored wood glue to the cheeks brow and mouth area to help the latex hold its shape when it came off the mold. After a total of about 10 layers, it is time to carefully peel off your mask. Step 3: The last steps for the mask was to trim the edges and glue some foam on the inside to help support the masks’ protrusions. And of course do not forget to glue in the old sunglass lenses to the inside of the mask. Now when it is shoot day, you have only got few steps to transform your actor into a fish person. First apply a bald cap then use liquid latex to attach the appliance to the actor. The face appliance should be pretty stretchy so that will help it fit better. For the hands, I simply used liquid latex to attach little strips of latex sheeting between Steve’s fingers. Finish up with some green make-up and you are done. [Test film] All right that is it for this week’s build episode. Remember to leave a comment down below and that the super test film airs tomorrow. [Viewer Tips]
