How to make your own “Pup” sicles at home Female: To guarantee you beat the heat this summer, we have ask the pet Life Advisor and authored the Pet Food cookbook Wendy Nan Rees to share her secret recipe for “pup” sicles to help keep your dog cool. Wendy: The basic recipe is to take some chicken broth or beef broth and some water. And when it is partly frozen then you can add anything in froze stick. A chew toy, a chicken steak, a beef steak, anything you want and then to dress it up, there are so many fun things. We added yogurt, fresh apple, chopped banana, and blueberries. We added pumpkin, we added chopped chicken. They are great for hydrating the animals and they are easy to do. Female: And dogs like fruit. Wendy: They love fruit. Female: I do not know dogs eat yogurt. Wendy: They do, they love yogurt, non-fat, plain, yogurt. Female: That sounds like something I already eat. Wendy: What is important is that you use it in small amounts. This is a treat to help hydrate them and cool them down. And if there is a fresh apple in it and fresh carrots in it they are also getting antioxidants and fiber and great benefits all the way around. Female: Kind of raise your ways to eat as a kid book. I mean without the tricky sticks. Wendy won’t you run us through one of your recipes. Wendy: Great, I would love to. This is Kathy’s favorite. So let us start with this. This has apple, banana, blueberry and a little bit of chicken broth, a little bit of yogurt and a little bit of water. Any molds that you can freeze, you can make this in. So do not worry if you do not have Popsicle trays. You can do it in a little ice cube trays and when it is, you know partly frozen then you stick it in the stick and then it will finish freezing in 24 hours. Female: Just mix it up with your real ice cube trays because it like if you have-- Wendy: Oh, it is a human ingredient. You can start with a 2/3 of cup of water. A 2/3 of cup of apple juice or cranberry juice or any other liquid, half a cup of chicken broth. When you are doing the beef ones, do chicken broth because that is not an over fragrance. You know the beef broth can be a little strong and then you want to have some fresh chopped up apple, fresh chopped blueberry, fresh chopped banana, and some plain nonfat yogurt. You put it all into a blender and I do it by hand. So I take a handful of apples, a handful of banana, or a banana chips, a handful of carrots and some blueberries and just ball it. Mash it all up and then once I have that paste I have my liquid. So I take the paste and I poured into the liquid and mix that and if it is not thin enough to pour into the trays then I just have a little more apple juice, a little more chicken broth, a little more water. You cannot make a mistake with this that is why it is such a great recipe. Any body can do it. Kids love to make them and you cannot make a mistake. There is no mistake. Female: You are making it for dogs, I am sure they are not going to like send it back to the chef as if it is not like exactly the way. Wendy: Hopefully not, that would be a bit embarrassing. Female: Keep cool your pet down, keep him hydrated and learn excellent chew toy. So do try this at home folks. Enjoy!
